I heard that SONIC YOUTH's contribution to this years record store day will be a reissue of Whore's Moaning: OZ '93 Tour Edition. I don't know any details beyond that unfortunately...

Why would they do that? They released all of those tracks on Dirty Deluxe.

Ozzy is the "spokesperson" for record store day - do you think they've jumped the shark? Does record store day really need a celebrity face? why does everything in our culture need to be mediated by 'celebrities'?

Record Store Day is pretty underwhelming as every year goes by... i'm a vinyl junkie but i find it rather unnecessary to even pickup any of these releases and even this Whore's Moaning reissue, i'd rather go to my local flea market and see i can find something older that is interesting that i don't already own or haven't heard yet.

Like I've discussed on this board before, I'd love to see a box set of Sonic Youth 12-inchers, including those singles and EPs that were only available on 7- or 10-inch. Now that would be a welcomed Record Store Day surprise from SY, considering how difficult it's becoming to find some of those old singles in decent shape (or at all).
Think about it: Hallowe'en (original mixes, with all the tracks from the various versions) Hallowe'en II Starpower Kool Thing Disappearer Dirty Boots (unless they decided to blow it up to full length and release it as an official live album) 100% Youth Against Fascism Sugar Kane Drunken Butterfly (Why not?) Bull In The Heather Diamond Sea Little Trouble Girl Sunday Nevermind Kali Yug Express They could release such vinyl in two volumes, with the records in their original covers. (I've probably forgotten a couple of things also worthy of inclusion.) |

Nels Cline on Record Store Day
I worked at Rhino Records in West L.A. from around 1976 to 1985. This was the time when little record stores such as (in the Los Angeles area) Rhino, Aron's, Poo Bah, Rene's, et al thrived by selling used records, cutouts, and BOOTLEGS. Other record store...s like Jem Records specialized in imports, and we would make pilgrimages to The Valley to buy the latest ECM records, weird prog rock records, and cutting edge/obscuro improv on Incus and FMP, etc. Like free-form radio programming, my heart always "zings" a bit when I experience a barely socialized underground record store somewhere. I recognize the atmosphere of wariness, the alienation mixed with inspiration, the passion for sound and culture, the desire to permeate one's life wholly with the certain singular stench of whatever one is obsessed with that week. Whether it's Rhino (long gone), Poo Bah (still sort of there in a different location), Atomic, or late lamented stores elsewhere like Hoboken's Rather Ripped, or newer (monster) stores like Amoeba, Waterloo (in Austin), Twist & Shout (Denver), or the numerous little hole-in-the-wall stores I stroll into across the globe whose names I have forgotten, I salute you all. - Nels Cline

Only 6,000 copies of Whores Moaning will be available worldwide of this EP re-issue originally released in 1993 in Australia to coincide with tour dates there. With the title referencing the earlier EP by friends/labelmates Nirvana, Whores Moaning includes the radio edit of “Sugar Kane,” covers of the New York Dolls’ “Personality Crisis” and Alice Cooper’s “Is It My Body,” and the instrumentals “The End Of The End Of The Ugly” and “Tamra.” The front cover artwork is a photocopy of one of Kurt Cobain’s dolls; the back cover is an original drawing by Cobain. And more importantly another release (think visually) will be announced by Sonic Youth on record store day.

I didn't pick it up but the mix on Personality Crisis is worth the price of admission.
esp the 'solo'
