Anyone had a great trip around Europe and want to share how they went about it? I was thinking about going to Europe in winter time maybe, but would like to visit as many places as possible and avoid those guided tour things, I did one of those in Rome and found it really boring.

Go to Venice and get lost in the morning fog wandering randomly through the calli, a surreal and heartwarming experience.

prague... beautiful city, beautiful people, beautiful food, beautiful beer.....

very cold and snowy in winter... adding to the beauty of the place
blissfully warm and sunny in the summer..... adding to the beauty of the people and the place
relativly cheap to get to and to stay there....i am in love with that place!

dublin is nice but stupidly expensive and crowded.. for sure visit but dont put it high on the list of priorities!

Bretagne is the only part of France I've ever been to, but I think it's probably the best. It's a lot like Cornwall in England- it feels like it hasn't changed for hundreds of years, and there's a really mythical atmosphere. They're nice folks there, not the mean kind of city folk you can come across when travelling. If you want to see 'real' France and not just a quick look around the Palace of Versailles and a gander at the Eiffel Tower, I suggest Bretagne.

Also, as far as Spain goes, the town of Tossa De Mar on the east coast is perfection. Its not too far away from Barcalona and it's really worth looking at. There's an amazing walled castle around which the town spirals outwards in little winding streets with all sorts of interesting nooks and crannies. It may have become a little 'touristy' but you can easily see past all of that.

I stayed in Italy for a week once and I remember nothing. Greek Islands are hit and miss, Crete is probably the most interesting, if you can get out to see the ruins of King Minos' palace, or whatever it was. I would avoid the UK at all costs unless you want to get stabbed to death brutally for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the tips guys. I've been to Venice twice (no I'm not rich it just happened to be close while I was living in Croatia) and would go there again for sure. I've been wanting to go to Prague for a while, and thanks for telling me about all the other cities, they sound wonderful. About being Australian, well I'm not a typical Australian especially since I wasn't born there or anything, and people have always been really friendly to me wherever I have travelled.
The thing I was wondering though, is what do the ones of you who have tried travelling from one country to another in Europe think about the best way to get to all these places. Have you found it's best hiring a car, going to train or taking a plane from one place to another?

You'll struggle to find a car hire company that will allow you to take a car across borders.

I'd take trains for short-ish journeys, and fly for the longer ones... Although with the advent of budget airlines, it can be much cheaper to fly than take a train.

An Interrail/Eurail pass is your best bet if you're going to be travelling for a month or so and want to hit a bunch of different places.
You can get cheaper ones that give you 10 travelling days in a month, or pricier ones that offer unlimited travel.

If you're planning to be in Europe in the pre-Christmas period, make sure you go to a decent German Christmas market. I went to Heidelberg in December a few years back to see a friend and visit the Christmas market, and it was fantastic. The fact that it snowed a lot helped, but it's still a great experience.

Me and my friend are making a two-week interrail trip to Stockholm-Copenhagen-Berlin-Prague in august 8-24th. Feel free to give tips where to eat, sleep, buy records, buy clothes and drink (good rock bars).

The rail option does sound good, I guess I would just need to take into account all the extra travel time but it would be nice to see the more things than I would in a plane. I would love to see Germany again (last time I was there I was a kid) so those markets sounds like a good idea. Let me know how the trip goes punkaspoo

Depending on your itinerary, I don't know if it would add that much time once you take into account how long you'd spend travelling to and waiting around in airports. And as you say, you'll see a lot more of the countries you're travelling through..
