I'm sick of my collection. I've heard everything about 20 times. Help me out. If you had to recommend one or two bands to someone, what would they be?

i posted you this in the other thread but in case you are deeply offended by my tone-deafness and won't look at it anymore, i was thinking you might like this: http://www.matadorrecords.com/mpeg/b...rybody_new.mp3 maybe. |

You call this psychedelia?
You are tone deaf! Not bad actually, but I wouldn't call it psychedelia exactly. |

Although I heartily approve of Yat-Kha, and I would even recommend Albert Kuvezin's solo covers record, to recommend them over the mighty Huun Huur Tu is, frankly, wrong. Sizzla Lady Saw Beenie Man Elephant Man Ward 21 Capleton Buju Banton Ghost Bounty Killa. You should investigate all of the above.

Dude, seriously, ignore the proffesor, get back to the early stuff. He'll put out a decent 7/ dub every now and again, but the earlier stuff (i.e. before he started courting Grammys) is stone cold dub-a-licious.
Edit: The fact that you picked out Beenie Man makes me wonder if you've heard Ward 21 or Lady Saw.

Buju Banton is a total cock, as are most dancehall types, but I'm not going to stop listening to them because I like listening to them and it's taken me forever to get the swing of what they're singing. Homophobes, yes, but I'd rather homophobes and murderous racists (cf black metal) than white boys with fringes.

Believe it or not, it was the music and not the message that I found so repellent.
You're English though, so you have a biological soft spot for this sort of thing, and I accept that. |

Do you deny that there is and has been some kind of enduring fascination in the UK for dub, reggae, dancehall and other Jamaican-flavo(u)red musical dishes?

We haven't had a big Jamaican tune here since Mr Vegas (although Elephant Man had a club hit). We do like it, and there's a big dancehall scene, but it's not very big amongst those not descended from West Indies types. Everyone loves Marley though. He's the black Bob Dylan...
