Allagash Dubbel Ale.
Mmmm mmmm.... I also make my own Belgian dubbel, which beats even this stuff by a mile. But I haven't had the time or inclination lately. Too hot. But this stuff's a great substitute. |

I had this one for the first time on the weekend. Quite nice but a little watery. After that it was rum, rum and more rum.

Stella. I wouldn't normally touch the stuff, but I was at a family picnic and needed something cold down my throat.

Stella. Yeah. I was out to lunch with my wife and some of her coworkers. My wife had been bragging up my homebrewing. Woman to my left: "Oh, so do you like Stella Artois?" Me: "Oh, yeah. Imported swill."
It's funny how those European lagers are what people think of as good beer. |

I've yet to find a lager that I will drink through choice. If it's very hot day and I want to drink a lager to cool down and quench my thirst, the basis of my choice is usually "which is the least fizzy and tasteless".
If anyone wants to recommend a good lager, I'll be interested to hear. |

Actually, lagers are very wide ranging. Usually lager refers to those lighter European beers like German pilsners. But they also encompass some interesting other things. Bock beers are lagers, for example. So I would recommend things like Mai bocks, doppelbocks (great!! dark beer). Also, Octoberfest styles, what's also known as the Vienna style, is a very good lager style.

Ah, well, here in England lager falls into one of two categories:
1. Watery fizzy piss that will never get you drunk and makes you belch. 2. Strong stuff that gets you drunk very quickly and makes you violent. |

I think lager in the UK usually refers to those fizzy tasteless beers (Stella, Fosters, Carlsberg etc). I've never liked them. Guinness is my drink of choice which you can now get cold filtered, but it shouldn't be drunk cold!
