Stumbled across this. Hardly a surprise, but depressing nonetheless.

The Birds
How depressing. Hitchcock’s awesome thriller is getting the remake treatment, with Martin ‘Casino Royale’ Campbell rumoured to be directing, and Naomi Watts linked with the project too. It has a release date of July 2009.

haha

Starfighter
A planned remake of the 1984 movie The Last Starfighter, which remains popular today. Nick Castle is currently attached to direct the project (he did the original as well, although his biggest hit as director is the 1993 kids’ movie Dennis). We fear this one may get lost in development hell. Hope not.

Some movies just aren't worth doing over. I mean, could you imagine a 2000s version of the video game?

The Evil Dead
Sam Raimi is attached to the remake of one of his most loved films, with both he and Bruce Campbell on producing duties. Set for release at some point next year, they’ll have to get their skates on, as there’s no sign of cameras being turned on just yet.

I don't care of Sam Raimi is involved; this is sacrilege (sp?).

Conan The Barbarian
The script is still being written for the remake of one of Arnie’s best-ever roles. It’s a fair bet that Arnie won’t be returning, but Sahara scribes Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer are beavering away on the screenplay. Production may yet start this year, apparently.

I seriously doubt they could find somebody who could outdo Ah-nold in terms of the so-bad-it's-good factor.

Fahrenheit 451
Frank Darabont – he of Shawshank Redemption and The Mist fame – has been linked with a fresh take on the Ray Bradbury book for a while. It seems he’s getting closer to honing a script too for him to direct, but it’s still not ready, so no idea of release date. Tom Hanks had been mooted to star.

Oh yeah, Tom Hanks is the first person who comes to mind when casting for a dystopian story. Even if he doesn't star, the very fact that anyone would even think of an idea like that proves they have only the vaguest grasp of the material.

Hellraiser
They’ve given up making sequels, so now they’re remaking the 80s original. No sign of Doug Bradley as Pinhead, but Clive Barker has been involved with the script, and Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury will be making their English language directorial debuts with the project.

This idea reminds me if the new Star Trek movie. Three words described why I know it'll tank the franchise for good-Lost In Space.

Tron
Will it be a sequel? Will it be a remake? Will they call it a ‘reimagining’? All these questions and more are set to be answered, as three decades on, Tron will be heading back to the big screen in 2010.

I must confess that I loved this movie when I was younger. But times have changed, and CGI effects have become so normal that they're really gonna have to pull out the stops in order for this one to work.

Akira
A live action version of the iconic anime film of the same name, the adaptation is believe to be being handled in two parts, and Leonardo DiCaprio has been linked with the project. It’s still at the scripting stage, although director Ruairi Robinson is attached to helm.

Admittedly, this one could be good. I just hope they'll follow the manga closer than they do the anime

Frankenweenie
Tim Burton’s terrific early short film is being brought to the big screen by… Tim Burton! There’s logic there, somewhere. December 2009 is the targeted release time.

Eh, why not?

1984
Tim Robbins is apparently hunting for the money for a new big screen adaptation of George Orwell’s classic and never-more-relevant novel. He’s not having much luck though, we’re led to believe.

I agree that the idea is still VERY relevant, but let's face it-the year 1984 came and went without any OBVIOUS Big Brother. They should project a 2012 release and call it 2021, like Orwell made 1948 into 1984.

The Dirty Dozen
Alias veteran Josh Applebaum has the unenviable task of coming up with a suitable script for the remake of the original classic. 2010 is the earliest it’ll be released.

One of the things that gave The Dirty Dozen such impact is that it was one of the first war movies to depict war as it really is-grisly and gruesome. In the post-Saving Private Ryan era, no new ground will be broken.

Footloose
Surely not? The 80s musical could be coming back to life if director Kenny Ortega has anything to do with it. That said, given he directed High School Musical and its spin-offs, he’d probably be allowed to do anything he wanted in Hollywood right now. Sigh. Footloose has thus far been optioned, and may go before the camera this year.

Great! And Miley Cyrus could do a new version of the theme song!

Dune
Frank Herbert’s source material is set to be mined again, for a new movie due out in 2010. Peter Berg, who directed the brilliant Friday Night Lights movie, is waving the megaphone, but further details are still sketchy.

Knew about this one already. It could be good, but I've always thought David Lynch's version is highly underrated.

Friday The 13th
Marcus Nispel – director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake – has inked his name on the dotted to helm the remake of the original Friday The 13th movie. It’s a great solution: run out of sequels, start at the beginning! It’s in pre-production now for a 2009 release.

[should be fantastic]

Hellraiser
They’ve given up making sequels, so now they’re remaking the 80s original. No sign of Doug Bradley as Pinhead, but Clive Barker has been involved with the script, and Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury will be making their English language directorial debuts with the project.

[If Barker makes it rather than just advises the script, it will also be fantastic, but if it is just another hellraiser franchise with out his personal involvement then it will be what we have seen before.. however I am very interested to see what Barker can add after decades of his different works]

A Nightmare On Elm Street
Hurray! That ‘reimagining’ word is being used to describe the now-in-the-pre-production stages new Elm Street movie. Michael Bay produces, but doesn’t direct. Thank goodness.

[Also curious what could come of this, a lot of the 80s horror remakes have been really good, they eliminate the cheese and add some real fright sometimes, though I hope they add a bit of Freddy's 'charm' from the later films to this one, he is a classic]

Suprised to see Herzog's Bad Lieutenant isn't listed.

I doubt most of those remakes will be made. Probably just the horror films..

I'm not against remakes in total. I loved Carpenters remake of The Thing and thought the Dawn of the Dead one had some good points too. What I object to is the way it has somehow become Hollywood policy simply to exploit fans of cult favourites, knowing they'll watch these remakes even if they're sceptical about the results. Fans of the originals should simply boycott them.

If I was to remake The Warriors I would transplant the story to a not-too-distant future. I think if you could see gang battles from 20?? or whatever, after the collapse of the automotive industry, it would be pretty interesting.. it could really help contextualise the conclave's reasons for a citywide takeover, like the government has failed them all, so a feudal gang rule is a better choice.. pretty sexy exciting dystopia I've got going here, ain't it?

http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/746/746394p1.html

Thats the remake-director's spiel on the whole remake project. He accuses the original of ripping off A Clockwork Orange? What a tosser.

The valid point I see that he could have was the gang "uniforms" in each. That's it. Also, I'll personally hunt down anyone who tries to remake A Clockwork Orange. Not that'll ever happen, I'm just putting the warning out there.

And doing another Dune isn't really a remake anyway in that it's an adaptation of the novel. Otherwise every time someone makes another Dracula film they'd be accused of trying to remake Nosferatu.

To be honest, I'm surprised it hasn't already happened. I'm sure some Hollywood studio head is busy right now trying to talk Mark Wahlberg into taking the lead role.

The character Conan was around prior to that film. Any future film(s) are adapting the character and Hyborian setting, not one particular film.

The one that I'm most enraged about is RoboCop. That is sacrilege.

Someone did tell me that Stephen Spielberg is doing an Oldboy remake with Will Smith as the star. Also, a Lady Vengeance remake with Charlize Theron. Funny, but I don't plan on seeing them. Most new films coming to mainstream U.S. theaters in general aren't worth paying attention to, let alone pointless remakes.
