I love love love their first 3 records on K.
After that they made nice albums, but became (quite obviously with such a peculiar style, in a way..) a bit more predictable. last I have is 2012, I think I missed a couple... Nice band, I had loads of fun when I saw them with the old drummer. |

Yeah I can definitely understand that, but I thought their last one ("Catharsis In Crisis") was without a doubt one of their best. You might give it a chance! |

a few years ago i saw an arrington di dionyso/ calvin johnson
gig. the former was cool doing a free improv set and the latter was terrible. but i bought lost light from dionyso and i hated it at first. then i realized that it is a mindblowing amazing album. i havent heard anything else by them. its like a mixture of beefhear television and dance beats

fugazifan, get the earlier ones if you like lost light, they're more "wild" in a way and definitely worth a listen.

Regardless of what you might say about their records, Old Time Relijun is surely a 99th percentile live band experience that you should never miss.

A solo gig is hit-or-miss. The dude can be magical or just really annoying in that Olympia-sorta way. Being such a "punk/indie/DIY utopia", it is a bubble community with a strange perception of itself and the outside world, and bands and artists that come from there often seem to look down their noses at everybody else.
I interviewed him back in 1995 and thought, "Jeez...Is this guy for real?" He made me sick. Then a year or so later, I finally saw his band, and it was outstanding. His newest band is his best, though. The rhythm is so locked-in and solid, the sax squealing among the finest of any whiteboy in angular arty rock, and Arrington is a masterful leader and crowd-stoker. As a solo thing, though, it can either feel like a lecture that you can only endure begrudgingly, or it can be magical, like the time I saw him in an actual nuclear fallout shelter buried below someone's backyard here in Davis. His throat singing was mesmerizing, and eventually echoed around the concrete chamber until it sounded downright scary. He later pulled out a rubber band and twiddled it like a mouth-harp while holding it between his teeth like a piece of floss. The room echoed it again to make it sound amped and electric. His pleadings to the crowd to explore their own world of sound were minimal enough to overlook....not too annoying.
