Do you, for instance, read a paper or a book while listening to a record, radio blah blah blah etc? I've always tended to read fashion magazines or the sort of celebrity trash that you get on Sunday papers supplements etc. I can't read a book with any music in the background, but washing and cleaning comes easier with the radio on. Louder music is generally for the vacuuming and DIY.

I always listen to music when I'm driving and when I'm cooking. Sometimes when I'm reading too, but it depends which room I'm in.

Doing tedious homework (I'm sure it undermines my memory somehow). Cleaning dishes. Driving the car alone. Long bus rides alone. Making dinner.
Those for the most part. Never while reading, though I can, unless it is an attention-demanding read. |

I can't read a book and listen to music either.
I like to page through magazines while listening to noise. When I work alone, I tend to listen to the more mellow side of classical and jazz. Stuff like Scriabin, Dvorák, Mahler, Liszt, Chet Baker, Mingus, Coltrane. I don't like to hear music in elevators, shops, dentist/doctor waiting rooms or mobile phones in public. For hard labor I normally listen to up-tempo music and in my car I want to get the feeling that I'm cruising. |

If I'm reading, the only music I can listen to is something I don't really have to concentrate on while listening to - something I enjoy and know won't require my full attention. So, Daydream Nation, Psychocandy or You're Just Too Obscure For Me...(The Verlaines) are good to listen to. If I was listening to something I hadn't heard before, I would have to concentrate.
But I always listen to something while going to sleep at night.

I can read a book while I'm listening to music, but the music must be instrumental and mellow, otherwise it distracts me from the text. For the past couple of days, the typical evening for me was lying in bed listening to Rameses III and reading Murakami's "Dance Dance Dance" while my girlfriend lied next to me reading her beloved Agatha Christie detective story. A nice and peaceful type of evening.

I can't read and listen at the same time.
Biking and music are great together, and I really don't care if it's dangerous or not. |

The other week I've shaved my head while listening to La Monte Young. The combination of clipper machine buzz and sustained drone was awesome.
