Sex is the most base of human drives although rape is considered a crime of violence. I think it begins with a sexual idea and mushrooms into violence when refuted. America is so sexually repressed, it would be interesting to see s study comparing rape per capita and sexual openeness in a certain society. Sweden and Denmark and those places are very open abut sex, I wonder if rape is as prevalent there. Oddly enough arson is considered a sexual crime in some cirles, arosonists have been discovered masturbating while watching their crimes unfold. The human mind is indeed strange.

It's that powerful, EVERYTHING is sex, advertising, music, food, Bruce Springsteen even eroticized cars in the '70s. Look at recidivism rates for sex offenders, they're almost guaranteed to do it again. Porn is number one with a bullet on the internet, nothing is in the same universe when it comes to raw numbers, it's more than a handful of folks doing this. People want SEX, some just don't bother asking and that's when trouble sets in a society.

That's a profound statement, to say the least. But it makes sense, only in a sex-saturated world, where base instinct rules over all, can people like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears become successful celebrities... I mean, without the sexual overtones inherent in these two pin-ups of celebritydom, without the dripping promise of sex in all its glory and grandeur, without the overt soft sell of sexual satiation, these people would never see the light of day, except as wenches, or miserable doddering fools,,,

It's rather depressing... Is it a trend or something that's more permanent. This shallow, sex-driven zeitgeist must surely be unique to the global culture and to this time? Has there ever been a more sexually-centric time in the history of this planet?

Marketing types employ pscyhologists to appeal to all levels in the sexual demographic, that's why you see viagra and cymbalta commercials all the time, aging boomers have disposable cash. Young people have the most money to blow and sex is used to sell them everything. The more taboos that fall the more advertisers will take advantage, that's why we seem saturated. But in America we aren't saturated, in Europe they're saturated but nobody pays it any mind because they're used to it. Janet Jackson's niple? We must have been the laughing stock of the western world with our reaction. Sex is nothing new of course, even the "alternative" stuff like S&M, B&D, & D/s has been going on for hundreds of years, it's just in our face now.

Exactly, and it seems to be going deeper... When all taboos have fallen, will sex be the most important thing in our lives? As opposed to its being a commodity now, I wonder if sex will become the major driving force of human existence.... If it isn't already...

The enjoyment of erotic desires is the only thing we can achieve that other mammals can't, that's why we keep having sex until the very end. We have opposible thumbs and we're aware of our mortality...other than that we may as well have all the "deviant" sex we can, as long as no one is hurt and you stay out of Alabama, who'll care when we're dead?

Rape is usually accepted to be more about control of the victim rather than the sex act itself
In Sweden rape is a huge problem
This is partly due to the fact that the laws in Sweden are stacked against the victim
When a girl was gang raped by a hockey team there a couple of years ago the court passed a lenient sentence on some of the perpetrators on the basis that she "asked for it"
There have always been major problems on compiling statistics for sexual offences as many people do not report them
In certain parts of the world, some cultures regard rape as a "justified" punishment for the "crime" of adultery
And we dare call outselves civilised

'Asked for it' That's really sad... How can this be happening in the 21st century.... Where is the future?

On the flip side you can have an overzealous prosecutor who has no qualms about smearing the names of the innocent as in the Duke case. That's a high profile incident, what about the one's that aren't? The media will go hog wild if there is rape or child abuse involved but not when someone is aquitted, then it's the back pages after the damage has already been done. Then there's the money, always the money. Get a court appointed attorney and it's curtains for you. The justice system is waaay screwed.
