Still thinking my shit through. But I don't really believe in top 10 lists. I bought so many albums this year that I had to tighten my belt on non-essentials like food and bills. For me it's go big or go home, and a top 50 is usually necessary. A top 25 will do on slower years (years during which I have a more interesting social life).
But I can offer up a rough draft of my top 10 albums, as long as everyone understands that, as inconsequential as it may be, this is NOT official. Electronic, Ambient/Synth Noise, Dubstep/Footwork-type Stuff: 1. Aphex Twin - SYRO 2. Fennesz - Bécs 3. Ben Frost - A U R O R A 4. KidKanevil - My Little Ghost 5. Vladislav Delay - Visa 6. patten - ESTOILE NAIANT 7. Plaid - Reachy Prints 8. Rustie - Green Language 9. Flying Lotus - You're Dead! 10. Untold - “Black Light Spiral” Maybe pile: Clark, Objekt, FKA Twigs, Ekoplekz, Mouse on Mars, Mincemeat Or Tenspeed, The Bug Rock/Punk/Indie-type Stuff: 1. Dub Thompson- 9 Songs 2. Thee Oh Sees - Drop 3. SWANS - To Be Kind 4. Perfect Pussy - Say Yes to Love 5. Thurston Moore - The Best Day 6. A Silver Mount Zion / Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra - Fuck Off! Get Free! We Pour Light on Everything 7. Shellac - Dude Incredible 8. Iceage - Plowing Into the Field of Love 9. The Body - I Shall Die Here 10. Big Ups - Eighteen Hours of Static *Maybe pile: Blonde Redhead- Barragán, Caribou - Our Love, Spoon - They Want My Soul, Morgan Delt - S/t, Pharmakon - Bestial Burden, Purling Hiss - Weirdon, Survival Knife - Loose Power, Deerhoof - La Isla Bonita Hip-Hop/Rap: 1. Underachievers - “Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium” 2. Ghostface Killah - “36 Seasons” 3. Shabazz Palaces - “Lese Majesty” 4. Run The Jewels - “Run The Jewels 2” 5. Black Milk - “If There's A Hell Below” 6. The Roots - “...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin” 7. SpaceGhostPurrp - “IntoXXXicated” 8. Wu-Tang Clan - “A Better Tomorrow” 9. Open Mike Eagle - “Dark Comedy” 10. J. Cole - “2014 Forest Hill Drive” (Maybe Pile:Freddie & Madlib - Piñata *J. Cole surprisingly bumped this one out of the top 10, at least for now. HS87 - We The Plug KOOL A.D. - WORD O.K. Diamond D - Diam Piece Big KRIT - Cadillactica Rick Ro$$ - Hood Billionaire Young Thug - Brick Squad Future - Honest KIT - Lownt God Theory Blah blah blah Yeah, I'm pretty fucking neurotic. All lists subject to change. A “General” or Non-Genre Specific top 10 will sit atop the top 50. I'll probably post it a few times. You've been warned. |

Brainwashed usually ends up with a pretty ripping good list, but from a purely aesthetic perspective, I don't think I've ever seen a more poorly organized list in my entire goddamn life, except of course for BW's previous "lists."
Structure, flow, order and cohesion are what make a list a list. This site pisses me off with their "List as quotation mark and boldface-peppered essay. Still, they're the first I've seen to give Ben Frost his proper due. A U R O R A was without question one of the year's definitive sonic statements. I think it landed in the '80s on pitchfork, and I'm not even sure I've seen it anywhere else. So cheers for that, even if the damn site needs a graphic designer like I need a klonipin. |
