I find it strange that the ol' BS is discussed so rarely on here. Definitely one of the top 10 bands ever for me. Such mighty riffage and rockage has not been matched since. Haven't spent all that much time listening to them since I was in high school, but every time I put them on nowadays I'm floored by just how wicked bad ass awesome they really were, especially for their time.

So... er uh, what are your favorites?

For me it goes like this: Paranoid, Black Sabbath, Master of Reality, Volume Four. Don't care too much after that, but Sabbath Bloody Sabbath is one of my favorite songs ever.

The heaviest riffs ever are to be found on Children of the Grave

Oh yeah........

supernaut is fucking amazing too.

Sabbath rule all.

Just get any of the first four albums. There's some good stuff here and there after that, and some not so good stuff.

One of the best shows I have ever been at was Black Sabbath at the London Astoria years ago. Paranoid and Ironman made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. An incredible band with massive stage presence. Tony Iommi certainly ranks as one of the greatest guitarists ever

Sabbath are a band I have nothing but admiration and fondness for, and yet I've never felt the urge to actually go out and buy one of their albums. Which is odd considering the utter rubbish I often spend my money on. I've decided to right that wrong immediately and order something right now.

yr crazy. black sabbath albums from 1970-1979 contain lyrics that are as important as the Bible or the Quran in many respects (seriously, prove me wrong here, I dare you! anyone, especially ThePits)

the problem is most people don't listen to the lyrics, its like subhumans sang "you cant hear the words cuz the music's too loud"

Making a cup of tea, monsieur. Tea first, then Sabbath recommendations, that be the rules here.

And a damned fine rule it is too. Nothing, not even the founding fathers of Doom itself, should come between a man and his tea.

FIRST FOUR ALBUMS = BEST MUSIC EVER!!!

Volume 4 has been on heavy rotation again for about the last 3 months. If it wasn't for "FX" and "Changes" it could be my top Sabbath album.

I'd start with the first album.

Early Black Sabbath fucking rules.

Black Sabbath with Ozzy > Dio solo > Ozzy solo > Sabbath with Dio.

Kind of a weird pattern there.

sabbath bloody sabbath is kinda weird, takes some time to let it sink at first but once it's there, it's there.

I think highly (cough cough) of all of the Ozzy records, but Master of Reality is the one I think is flawless.

Paranoid is full of flaws, which is much of it's charm and listens like a good comic book for the ears. I guess MoR does have that element in "Sweet Leaf", to the extreme even, but otherwise is such an amazingly serious (and successful!) work.

Despite their claim to fame as the sludge metal originators, the speedy bass-line to "After Forever" is just completely engaging, with Ozzy's biting lyrics taking on Christian hypocrites from a Christian perspective among his best ever. From there through "Children of the Grave" on the first side they never fail to spellbind. Then the surprisingly mellow "Solitude" opens the second side in a different sort of darkness - bleakness. From there through the brilliant power riffage of "Into the Void" they don't let up either - the record's end really does feel like taking off into space as an escape.

Not dissing the other fine records of that era at all, but this one is just extra-special to me.

ohh yeah, nativity in black is great.

megadeth's paranoid is great, al jourgensen tears up supernaut, biohazard rap after forever, bruce dickinson does sabbath bloody sabbath justice, rob halford and wino with geezer and bill do an amazing the wizard, sepultura and white zombie make their covers their own and type o negative once again prove that they are better at covering songs than doing their own.

their version of war pigs is still my very favorite faith no more song.

avoid the second nativity in black, though.

Yeah, who doen't dig the first 4 Black Sabbath records? The chorus riff on "Sweet Leaf" is one of my favorite riffs. At parties, I treat my friends to piano renditions of "Sweet Leaf" and "Paranoid". Heh. Paranoid is a great album, as is Vol. 4. Yep.

I think the, uhm, "Luke's Wall" part of "War Pigs" features some of my all-time favorite guitar playing.
