I've already been to Donnau Festival in Austria and Primavera Sound in Spain and I'll be going to ATP in England this year.
yeah, so many good festivals around. why Oxygen and not Electric Picnic? I know EE doesn't have stongest lineup compare to previous years, but I heard it's a good crack as well and what I like about it is, that it's not so mainstream orientated. I live in Ireland for 6 years now and I haven't been to both yet...it's time to experience some propper Irish music festival :-). |

I'm not a fan of summer music festivals. Too much time spent in the heat with a bunch of irritating people sitting through a bunch of shit acts just to get to a few good ones (which in some cases, you'll be lucky if there are any.)

I'm going to a folk festival in a few weeks - weekend in a field, three pubs, some tents with half-stages in, lots of real ale and cider, youngest by 20-odd years. It'll be the third year in a row, and it's always a fucking brilliant weekend. Last year I had 4 geriatric Yorkshirians singing Carter family songs to me less than two foot away. Utterly gorgeous.
I'm also off to the the fiddlers festival in county Donegal, which is always an intense 7 days of mostly Donegal fiddling (which, so far as I can make out, is quite a difficult style), though there was some Cajun and Klezmer stuff last year. It's a proper shambles of a festival, no stages, just pubs and sessions. I'm tempted by a Sevdah festival in Bosnia, but as the dates get closer, it's looking less likely. There's a load of festivals all over the show that I always fail to get to. I'll probably nip into a few Westcountry 'field + bands + rough cider + bad organisation' type festivals as well, but that's always more ad-hoc. Oh, and the proms, I think that counts. It looks like I won't make it to more than 2 shows for financial reasons, but I'm really quite excited by the prospect of some Schnittke.

You're going to the wrong festivals, clearly. Festivals, for me, aren't really so much about seeing band x, they're about having a good time, seeing some things you haven't seen before and getting pissed with your mates.

15th Olympia Experimental Music Fest starts tonight, but I can't make it despite earlier plans to. I will be there tomorrow, which I booked, and am playing.
Then No.Fest is in Portland in my neighborhood St. John's next week, and we're playing that too. Then I probably won't leave the house until Sonic Youth play here at the end of July. |
