From 12 Angry Men (masterpiece) to Before the Devil Knows Your Dead (masterpiece). Plus a bunch of masterpieces inbetween.

Yes, already tweeted (yes I tweet, sorry) about this. "Serpico", "Dog Day Afternoon", "Network" (even though I still feel Peter Finch beating DeNiro was a snub) and "Before the Devil Knows you're Dead" are all amazing, repeat-viewing films.
I have often heard of Lumet being described as an "actor's director" and I couldn't agree more. Pacino was incredible as Michael Corleone, but did he ever shine more than he did in Dog Day? I doubt it. Being able to bring out Pacino's intensity while keeping him grounded enough to not let the performance become over the top in a bad way (as in parts of "Heat" and a slew of others movies). Or Ethan Hawke in "Before the Devil...", I've never thought much of Hawke yknow. Never thought he was terrible or scene-stealing, but holy shit is he perfect in that movie. I'm sort of ashamed to say I've never seen "12 Angry Men" but I will definitely make time for it in the near future.

I know Entertainment Weekly is supposed to be lame, but I thought this was a great article:

R.I.P. Dog Day Afternoon is a classic.
Sadly, I haven't seen anything else of his. Equus sounds pretty interesting though. |
