Sometimes I am dissatisfied with my record/cassette/cd collection when I look at it close up. There's a lot, but it's all about 30 or so bands. My problem with discovering new music is, if I like it, I instantly want to buy all of their work. Which is shit financially, and I never get around to listening to it all properly anyways.

So these days I am reluctant to venture outside of my bubble. For now.

just like gmku I always seek out new music. music in the very gneral sense, is one of the few things i see in life worth being alive for.

art, science, and sports are my others.

Music is my blood. I always explore new sounds. I just bougth a cuple of albums recorded in the 60's of japanese folk flute and string instruments. It always makes me feel the same when i listen to new sounds, new music, rock or otherwise. It is a joy I cannot describe without sounding like some sort of fucking hippie.

There are a few musical terrains I choose not to enter, because I hate them. tejano music, folk music, slow jams, "electronic" music (house, jungle, techno, etc etc BLAH) and Rhythm and Bullshit, are all off limits in my mind. Luckily there are countl4ss other types of music, from throat singing, to zydeco, to salsa, to jazz and japanese and etc. that i can discover.

but who knows? when I get old and weak and stupid I may need these old and weak and stupid music genre's to listen to.

When I do buy something "new," people lash out at me for either being too elitist or buying the hype. For example, I bought Mirrored and can't get enough of it. I love it. But I express my love and people bash it for being overhyped. Like it's my fault? Like I should stay away from an album I like because it's hyped? Give me a break, I say, of that Kit Kat bar.

I sometimes feel that way, too. Do I really want to check out this new band, because I know as soon as I fall in love with this LP I'll want more of the same.

That doesn't stop me though.

But more and more I find I'm getting more cautious. I tend to wait til the consensus is in on a lot of stuff before plunking down the coin, unless it's something I'm sure I'll like. I bought Mirrored the week it came out because I'd heard enough of it to know it was an album for me, and that was before looking at any reviews.

Like Rob, I too steer clear of certain terrain, all of the ones he mentions, plus salsa. Some stuff I just don't "get," and life is too short blah blah blah. But yeah, like Rob says, there are plenty of other interesting areas to explore.

it depends where i am, i tend to get into long depressions (musically and otherwise) like the one i have been in for a month, where i tend to just play certain records over and over or just what whatever else is on the shelf

also the lack of cash doesn't help, but if i have enough cash then i start seeking out stuff

I don't always seek out new music, but if it's waved under my nose I may give it a try. It depends on whether the way it's presented to me is intriguing enough.

Rock is my favourite music, so I'm more likely to be tempted by it, but I'm happy to give non-rock a try.

I seldom buy newly released. I seldom buy rock these days. This is not a 'I'm so hip' comment [I am hip, check my shoes]. Looking at the records I've got this year it's 'classical' (still too broad a term), 30s-50s jazz/ pop, 50s/60s country, easy listening and 'world' (which is a RUBBISH term). I also acquired a gash load of mid-late 90s pop recently from a mate.

I am constantly looking for new and interesting sounds, "rock" or no.
I have gone through phases where "rock" was just not gonna go anywhere near me, but the pendulum always swings back and forth. Certainly I have spent a lot of time with abstract music, modern classical, "chamber prog" groups like Art Zoyd and the like, tons of folk music and of course soundtracks and incidental film music.
I do enjoy digging deep in the past on occasion. I miss working at the used record mailorder place for this very reason. So many undiscovered gems and intriguing rabbitholes to explore there.
