Okay yeah I posted this on RYM as well, sue me, maybe you guys could help out since you're all so smart and stuff.
I've never been too into bluegrass for one reason.. the local bluegrass that's played on the radio has this awful, awful singing.. old men who sound like they are dying, practically.. Nickel Creek, on the other hand, are much younger than that, and there are pretty voices involved. So what's some stuff similar to Nickel Creek in that way? I have to say, though, I'm not even sure what music I'm looking for, to be honest. Where does bluegrass end and folk begin? How closely are the two related? All I know is I want music that has a mandolin, banjo, instruments like that. |

I've never listened to Nickel Creek much, but give Old Crow Medicine Show a chance. They're young guys who play bluegrass and put on a really good concert.
For somebody who plays banjo I should have more recommendations, but if you don't want old stuff it's pretty limited. |

Interesting that precisely what you don't want from bluegrass is precisely what I like about it (old men on the verge of death).
I don't know a great deal about bluegrass, but I do know that Doc Watson or the Carter Family are essential for anyone's collection. But you might also enjoy something brilliantly inauthentic like Hayseed Dixie. Or if the more commercial side of things interests you, Dolly's Little Sparrow or the Dixie Chicks should see you right. Obviously, Dolly can do no wrong. Herr Rail knows a lot more about modern country than I do, I'm sure he'll post something useful. Oh, and the best thing I ever saw Nickel Creek do was when the mandolinist played a Bach piece for the BBC.
