...but had no idea other people knew about them.
There are a lot of bands like that for me, since I discover most music on my own and therefore have no reference point on how popular they are. Here's a few... Animal Collective Brian Jonestown Massacre Caribou Deerhoof Do Make Say Think Explosions In The Sky Jesu Laura Veirs Le Fly Pan Am Melt Banana Rilo Kiley Sigur Ros Silver Mt. Zion Six Organs of Admittance I've known most of this stuff is somewhat popular now for a while, but when I first discovered them I thought "wow, this is great, and I don't think anyone has really even heard it!" only to find out that almost everybody has, and I'm just way behind. |

None. Not meaning to piss on your thread, but I'm not naive enough to think that tons of people don't have the same exact tastes as me. If I ever thought I liked something obscure, people on here like batreleaser and everyneurotic have proven to me that there are tons of people into most of same things that I am.
Maybe I just don't understand the question, but none of the bands listed on here are shocking at all in how well-liked they are... Also, I like Afghan Whig's "gentleman" quite a bit. As for how I discover music, I honestly couldn't tell you. People download off of me on soulseek and I randomly download albums off of them in return. That's usually the way. |

hey rob!!!! hood are fucking amazing and i know that torn curtain here also likes them. slavo was involved in the organization of a gig to his town.
i would probably say monosodic but now i know other people know them, i once wrote to diy noise label is they were interested in releasing a split 7" between monosodic and another more popular band (which fell through and won't happen anymore) and the guy told me to write to other labels who might want to co-release it with him, suggesting crucial blast and apop, and i told him i didn't want to mail press releases and demos and stuff because it would take a lot of time and he told me "trust me, they know monosodic" and i was like "huh?". |

in the town i live in i'm very surprised if people like the same things i do, but especially if i'm on this messageboard, i find my tastes are not so obscure and i like it that way. i don't like being the only person that is into some band or form of music.

Not to piss on your reply, but I think you are right, you don't understand my question. It's not a matter of people having the same taste or of it being shocking that other people like it, at least objectively speaking. You can have similar taste as somebody else and still find something they have never heard of. With these bands that is what I thought I had done, only to find out that a lot of people know about them, and they are quite popular. Sure, you don't find it shocking that these bands are well-liked, and neither do I. But when I found out about them, liked or not, I had no clue so many people knew about them. I only brought it up because I've known this to happen to quite a few people. |

In real life I know like one or two people who like most of my favorite bands. For example:
Animal Collective(this is getting better, though. Lots of people are getting into them.) Xiu Xiu Cat Power Fiona Apple Elliott Smith the Smiths Morrissey Panda Bear Thom Yorke

I live in a rural little meth town.
So, yeah. I do. Oh, and it doesn't help that all my friends are tweakers and shit. They only listen to Lil' Wayne and shit.

Ditto on the No Wave bands. I have no clue how well others like these.
Brian Jonestown. People love them or hate them. I've never known anyone who was neutral. Kind of the same for Royal Trux. To an extent, Yo La Tengo.

yeah i guess if i had to pick bands the main ones would be:
big black dna the swans the minutemen neu! the stooges mc5 einstruzende neubauten black flag actually almost all the hardcore, no wave, post punk, pre industrial, blah blah blah music that i got into back in 8-10 grade. i remember letting a friend listen to einsturzende neubauten and he laughed and said they were fucking horrible. he said the same thing about sonic youth (but people already knew about them when i was getting into them). the funny thing is a few years later he burned all my sonic youth and einsturzende neubauten cds. now he's no longer a friend (not for that reason though). anyway, yeah i found out all the obscure stuff (back when gang of four and shit was rarely ever talked about in any music magazine) on my own with no help from other people. i also didn't have the internet until 2001 so with no help from that in my later high school years. |

i have take it from them man, i like it and all but i'm in no rush to get more albums by them, nor to listen to that one that much more. Quote:
that part of the post i typed because i was going to mention monosodic like i do when i feel like it, but then i thought "uh, batreleaser knows it, and others do too", so it reminded me of that story. unfortunately, it didn't amount to anything, so i never wrote those labels to know if they really knew the band and the other band pulled out of the project. and it's not like i was going to do a split with extreme noise terror or rotten sound...actually it's a band scissor shock played with in their hometown. anyhoo, i just realized i wrote "them" and i have typos galore in there. ugh... |
