Got this album in a 2CD+DVD set yesterday. Totally blew my mind, it's fantastic! Anyway, I'm assuming I should get Boces next? I'd appreciate your opinions.

yes. boces is great but not as great as yerself is steam. most of my mates who like mercury revnever even heard of anything pre deserter songs and when i gave them that it was kinda "where ythe hell is the tunes...." kinda vibe..... rev were never the same after dave shady baker left, kicked out, got lost, fell asleep... whatever.... steam, ego, boces and see you on the other side are gems... the rest of the rev albums are just boring namby pamby floor fillers for the nme generation who just want to be told what to like....
also try and get your hands on dave bakers solo album, "world" under the name shady... its a gem! |

From what I understand, Deserter's Songs was kinda their Soft Bulletin. Both albums that ended the days when a band used to kick ass.
Man the Flaming Lips used to be so fucking good. |

I blame David Fridmann. I like Moles on Deserter's Song, but as mentioned above, nothing tops Yerself is Steam (Frittering has been my favorite song since 1992. other songs come close, but nothing else tops it for me). Quote:
seriously. now they make me want to kick people in the head. |

Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips both should have just left the saccharine symphonic phase alone.

It's not that the Soft Bulletin is bad...It's just that the Flaming Lips used to rock and that album does not rock, so It's disappointing in that sense.
I'd have to say Frittering is my favourite song off Yerself is Steam, and well on it's way to becoming one of my favourite songs altogether. |

I've only been able to listen to it on my computer thus far. I will get around to listening to it on my stereo soon.
