If you follow a professional sports team--and they are based reasonably close to where you live--you know that with rare exceptions, they will have a schedule every season which will include a good number of
home games and that you will be able to see at least one or two.

However, if you are enthusiastic about bands that tour on a national or international level, your very favorite ones: (1) may not tour at all in any given year; (2) might tour and not have a gig anywhere near where you live; (3) may tour and have a gig in your town or reasonably close by but it's on a day when it is impossible for you to attend due to work, family, etc. (4) might break up--sports teams have been known to disband or move far away to another city but with far less frequency.

Just the way things are, I suppose.

that's one of the reasons why I started taping shows. To share the live music that other people can't attend to, and hopefully get some nice shows in return
wish more people would think that way, always bothers me that there's hardly any recordings shared of bands that are known to be taper friendly, e.g. because they allow their shows to be uploaded on archive.org.

Also: major disparity between sports television and music television. Imagine a channel/network dedicated to music, except the best possible iteration of the idea. A broad distribution platform which would truly depict the depth and scope of music and music fandom. Ideally: lots and lots of live concerts from a wide variety of quality performers across genres (and "tiers") with programming choices reflecting truly independent and interesting voices. I wonder if something like that could ever happen, if it could be sustainable without the lowest common denominator/commercial pop interests running it into the ground. Somehow strike a balance between popular acts and lesser knowns, DIY stuff. Maybe outsource a lot of work to websites that are already doing similar work like Live at Amoeba, NYCtaper, Pitchfork festival livestream, KCRW, Daytrotter, Music Vault @ youtube, Archive.org, DimeADozen, get ATP involved, get Coachella involved, get FYF Fest involved, etc, etc...
Hire teams of music enthusuasts/videographers to document their city/region, hit festivals, just get in depth to the degree that ESPN does with their chosen obsession. A dream perhaps; maybe destined to devolve into MTV2 and VH1 Storytellers: Motley Crue.

We USED to have music channels and TV shows like that. Shit even MTV used to be like ESPN for music including many live performances. Alas, the "music industry" changed and so did how we process and receive music.
