I would imagine with a band like sonic youth it's just about impossible to collect everything; there's too much going on with side projects and little projects that no one ever hears about, and have like 200 copies available worldwide.
I would love to own everything but I know that I never will, so I mostly just stick to collecting the actual 'sonic youth'/syr stuff, and go easy on the solo stuff (besides the 'big' solo stuff, such as Psychic Hearts/Trees, some Lee stuff and Free Kitten, etc.)

I once had a dream that I was going to collect EVERYTHING... SY and related side projects, all formats!!. I have since woken up, but I still try to get everything. However, I still have a few gaping holes in my collection as I have relaxed on this regime every now and then over the years. I think that it is dangerous to be totally obsessed... it has to be fun as well. I will admit to being totally obsessed with Kim and Thurston's output though. Thank god Kim is not as productive!. (As far as recorded output goes that is.)
