Oh and Peavey Rage amps are excellent value. They sound much bigger than they look. Also Epiphone have some low wattage valve amps, so you can get good tone at lower volume than other high watt valve amps.

I second this. My first guitar was this guitar exactly (except blue and white). The neck is very easy on the hands and has a nice thin profile. The sound is top notch for the price and it's not complicated. I paid $150 for mine around 4-5 years ago.

As for amp, I say Fender Frontman 15 (Reverb or without), about $100. Great small amp (solidstate, tube is for those who know what they're doing (I don't own a tube amp), plenty of power and solid tone for a beginner.

Edit: damn, I should read the threads before I post. SuchFriends just posted my rig entirely (I actually OWN the 25R and it's damn good). I say buy what I have.

What about a beginner's electric guitar pack? It will come with an electric guitar, an small watt amplifier and other things like a strap, DVD's.

Usually they aren't the greatest quality though. IMO second hand is the way to go, you get a guitar that's worn in and sounds great.

Just be sure that it's not TOO worn in

I agree but generally used guitars need to be set up. And who's going to set it up? Although new guitars can sometimes be in need of a set up too.

Going to a cool guitar store (not guitar center) and asking for some help picking out a well set-up cheap used guitar, a cheap practice amp, a strap, and a tuner (and get them to throw in a pack of strings, some picks, and a n instructional DVD while they are at it) would be a good option, though it may run up the bill more than a package.

that is crap. the set up i suggested is better versions of everything in those packs, and usually you can get all of it cheaper because of the endless sales at big chain music stores.
