....At the turn of the nineteenth century, the world was a rapidly changing place. The old world and ancient traditions of Europe, African and Asia were being egregiously challenged under the unyielding force of industrialization and modernization pulsating across the globe. Within a single generation, entire histories and cultures had been transformed into multi-cultural hybrids due to the influx of new technologies and trade patterns. A major contender in this evolving world were the Yihetuan [Boxers United in Righteousness], a socio-political association which focused on the martial arts, xenophobic anti-foreignism, and in particular the belief and use in supernatural magical abilities. In the late 1890s, the Yihetuan began a campaign against the dissemination of foreign presence and influence in southern and eastern Asia. After the Opium Wars of the 1850s and 1860s, the European presence in China had increased dramatically.
The British and the French dominated trade and were also in positions of political authority with the ruling Qing government. The impact of the Europeans was devastating to southern Chinese culture in particular, and the Yihetuan reaction represented the common interests and popular opinion against foreigners in Chinese business and politics. The Yihetuan used the belief in spiritual possession and magical rituals of invulnerability and supernatural strength to gain: tactical, logistical and popular support for their raucous anti-foreign campaigns of 1899-1901. Further, the Yihetuan thrived in a common atmosphere of desperation, frustration, superstition, crowd syndrome, paranoia and death anxiety..... anything to add?
