a valuable cause, another lazy, misguided and narcissistic movement in armchair activism, or harmless fun that at it's worst gets people cold and at it's best sends some money towards ALS research.
I side with the third option. how about you? if you were nominated, would you do one?

don't know what you're talking about but i'll venture that "narcissistic" seems the correct assessment of anything done in public view.

rich fucks spend $500,000 to throw gala events that end up raising $8,000 for some local charity. crock OF SHIT.
there is no self-aggrandizing or congratulatory pats on the back if the rich fucks just give $500,000 directly to a charity. Many celebs and rich people donate tons of money and time without the publicity whore aspect. wish they all did.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed

I'm all for awareness. Just like you asked "what's ALS?" At least something as lame as the ice bucket challenge will get people to ask and become aware of it. Is this a disease that can be easily wiped out with the right breakthrough? I have no idea, yes this is a fad that will have its time and then be forgotten about except for those that suffer it, but at least if it gets the information out there its a small victory.

I wouldn't call it a challenge in August. If it were January, sure. Otherwise it's just a quick way to cool down briefly + raise some apparent money.

Oh, fucking priceless... Thanks for posting that. I've always thought that charity is bullshit and window dressing and this confirms it. As for the sequester legislation there is a reason so many liberals signed it--- it was meant not to take effect. A sort of suicide pill. But the usual fuckers ended up cutting their noses to spite their faces, and everyone lost. |
