Cuz... I did. Thinking back, I'm not sure why I went to the trouble, since it's just been sitting in my pages app, taking up space. After a year of personal score keeping, excessive trips to record stores, and a whole lot of wasted time that could have been spent on more important things, I completed my list.
So I'm fucking posting it here because if everyone is equally ambivalent about my opinions (not just anyone's, but MINE... ME! A bonafide really big music fan you've never met, who lives an oppressively ordinary life and is, essentially, nothing to you! Just trust that I'm an expert on something , or whatever.) Best Albums of 2013: 1. Kanye West - Yeezus 2. Black Bug - Reflecting the Light 3. Flaming Lips - the Terror 4. Fuck Buttons - Slow Focus 5. Botany - Lava Diviner (Truestory) 6. The Drones - I See Seaweed 45. Nai Harvest - Whatever 46. Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest 47. My Bloody Valentine - mbv 48. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Push the Sky Away 49. Death Grips - Government Plates 50. Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold If nobody saw it, I'd feel much worse about all the time that went into this goddamn thing. I stand by it well enough, so I guess it's a success in that regard. Please, let me not me the only one who did something like this. Post your lists and make me feel better. |

In no particular order
Heliotropes "A Constant Sea" Midnite "Lion Out of Zion" Talib Kweli "Prisoner of Conscious" Lee Ranaldo "Last Night on Earth" Body/Head Killah Priest "The Psychic World of Walter Reed" Ghostface Killah "Twelve Reasons to Die" Shannon Wright "In Film Sound" MC Eiht "Still Hood" Midnite "Be Strong" Palms "Self/Titled" Mazzy Star "Seasons of Your Day" Cappadona "Earth, Wynd, and Fyre" Atoms For Peace "AMOK" (only live though, record sucked) Meat Puppets "Rat Farm" Chance the Rapper "Acid Rap" Hieroglyphics "The Kitchen" Janelle Monae "The Electric Lady" E-40 "The Block Brochure Vol IV,V,VI" there are more and more but these were all I managed to get through last year... I still think that not just for hip-hop but music in general that 2013 was the best year since 1998..

@SuchFriends: regarding your pm, Killah Priest put out an excellent album, and it was in my hip hop top ten. But because hip hop dominated the year for me, I had to consider that I had a rap bias while compiling this list. As you can see, I staggered my top hop hop albums (Yeezus, 12 reasons, LONG.LIVE.A$AP, Indigoism, Killah Priest, Boldy James, Black Milk's No Poison No Paradise, and MNIMN) throughout the list, rather than filling the top 29 with them.
I also left off the straight mixtape shit (like Doley Bernays, and Tree) because they're not albums. And I also had to consider how much of the album I listened to straight through. One thing about Psychic World is that it sounds better to me on shuffle, and I rarely listen to the whole thing. And as good as it was, it didn't receive more play from me than the albums above it. Still a goddamn genius album, with (you're right) some of the most insightful and poetic songs released by a street-bred emcee in eons. I wish there were more Wu guest spots, but perhaps they aren't as involved with the work of their meet "affiliates." I need some new hip hop this year. So far, aside from the obvious MADLIB and Freddie Gibbs, Schoolboy Q, Mastermind, etc. but I really need to know what Underachievers are up to, and stay vigilant about newer shit. |

I only listened to V and VI but I enjoyed the hell out of both, especially the solo tracks. When the man has that much good material I don't understand why he surrounds himself with subpar guests for so much of the albums' run time |
