They pretty muched skipped over the 80's on the show.
They were like: Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, MC5, bla bla bla Then CBGBs, Sex Pistols, Clash, X, bla bla bla a little bit of whining and bitching about hardcore without any counter-argument a little bit of whining and bitching about new wave without any counter-argument or recognition of post-punk. BAM Nirvana, with assorted Sonic Youth footage but no mention whatsoever of Sonic Youth. |

Try "Punk: Attitudes"by Don Lett, with Thurston, Glenn Branca, Henry Rollins, and other people you mentioned. A good stuff.

those sorts of shows always dissapoint. i mean they are made for a mainstream audience who dont really listen to that type of stuff anyway. they are never going to please everyone either but i do find it amazing that they do wash over whole sections of musical history without so much as a mention.
sonic probably deserve their own show to be honest.

I suppose the three minutes they devote to 80s underground makes this a bit better than the others, still.... The old story goes: Sex Pistols broke up. Silence. Then Nirvana! It's a lie, of course. PUNK: ATTITUDE points out this hole, but does little to fill it in. Read OUR BAND COULD BE YOUR LIFE and get your 80s underground fill. I know, reading is harder than watching, but it's worth it. |

Not agree with you, 'cause they hand over to Rollins who explains what the underground punk of the 80's, with Hardcore labels, really was. For sure it's not the main subject of the report, but it's quite interesting. And I admitt they don't show what SY really was in the 80's. I know it's a shame.

VH1 documentaries usually leave a lot of things out. They are fun to watch though.

There was a punk doc on VH1 like, dick years ago (i was in middle school)--- and they had a brief skip of the 80's that included a bit of dead kennedys, which got mentioned because they focused on the problem with 870's punk-- neo nazis. And they maybe said something bout black flag. THen nirvana and the green day. Also, There's apparently one (and only one) reason green day got big-- NIRVANA! Becasue no in the mainstream ever said the word 'punk' til they came aroundd... not even the days of ramones and sex pistols-- it was still underground then.

that movie is a bunch of bollocks, a side from great commentary and some even greater footage (like some pre-rasta bad brains show) it's fucking bullshit. they just said that "no wave" was a representation of the ultimate punk and just gave a quick mention to the bands involved, mostly concentrating on the time james chance beat up legs mcneil, forgot to mention that branca went on to be a composer then hardcore as being violent crap with some sprks of good things, they didn't even got to use appropriate agnostic front footage (used one video from their 90's reunion), didn't mention the germs, didn't mention fear, almost didn't mention black flag and then wham sonic youth as a pit stop to NIRVANA!!!! of course, how much time can you devoter after spending almost half the movie retelling the tale of the sex pistols and how revolutionary were the clash because they started adding reggae to punk and devoting something like 10 minutes to chrissy hinde talking about how cool she is. read american hardcore and our band could be your life instead. |

Was that in the Up From the Underground episode? I was flipping between that and the hockey game last night, and I mostly saw the people talking about rap, and then I saw them talk about jane's addiction and REM. |

True, but it's more a glance at the origins of punk....all in all the episodes are half decent for a 45 minute glance at different aspects of "rock." Either way this shit was made in 1995 and was the first (I believe) doc of the history of rock.....I remember when they first showed it on PBS.
