Yeah, the Monks are totally ace. Their 1965 demo tapes have just been released on cd and lp quite recently. I have a copy on order at my local record shop. See here:

The demos one only came out a few weeks ago or thereabouts. I contains versions of a lot of songs from Black Monk Time, a few others that didn't make the album and a couple of tracks from the pre-Monks band The Torquays (I think that's what they were called anyway)

I love the monks. They have such an interesting and forward looking approach to feedback plus all the songs were driven by those weird beats. Does the demos cd sound like a normal band or what the monks evolved into later on?

I never knew about them until this past winter when I saw the Black Monk Time LP displayed in the window. I checked the reviews when I got to my office, then immediately headed back out to grab that sucker. It's pretty cool.
Do the demos sound much different from the LP?

How do these demos differ from five upstart Americans [Omplatten records]?

It's very good, it's got 2 Torquay's tracks (which are brilliant) and 2 nice essays by people who were the Monks, and possibly still are. This place sells it.

OK, I googled it... Haven't seen the tracklisting for the new demos one but looking at the Five Upstart Americans tracklist (early demos plus 2 tracks from the Torquays) it sounds like it's probably the same thing.

It is the same except the new one has one extra track called Monk Hop which is by Jason Forrest (of Donna Summer fame I think...not THE Donna Summer though) and is from that Silver Monk Time tribute.

I Hate You is fucking unbelievable. I got that stupidly deluxe Light In The Attic vinyl reissue of Black Monk Time, and it was worth every considerable penny...
