They're everywhere. Brand new guitars that've been cosmeticallt 'aged' in order to make your new fender look like some old museum piece.
Some of the look like quite 'authentic': Others just look ridiculous: Either way, has there ever been a more stupid trend ever? I mean isn't half the fun of owning a guitar having it age with you? |

That's the fun part. Plus people charge ridiculous amounts for something that, if so inclined, you could do with a cigarette and 50 cents worth of sand paper. I fucking hate reliced stuff.

They were invented for Keith Richards in the 80s. 'Nuff said.
I've actually made my own out of a Squier. |

Having it age with you is great. One of my guitars has scratches and blood stains on it, it would seem pointless to buy something that looks like that rather than do it yourself. It's like those ripped jeans or ripped Converses you can buy.

If that's true then that's fucking hilarious. I have a pair that are virtually in bits if anyone wants them - sun, puddle, piss and dogshit worn the good old-fashioned way. |

The market favors convenience. If anti-fashion can sell, then it is fashionable.
You should have seen this coming with the pre-ripped/faded jeans. |

They make me think of people who buy BRAND NEW jeans that look like this:
I can beat up my own guitars, and my own jeans. So yeah, lame. |

Relic-ing is the stupidest fucking sales gimmick ever.
I like to keep my shit nice anyway; I've played guitars for years and years on end without them looking all shitty. |

You see kids buying them and just think, if that guitar really was as old as you want people to think, do you honestly think that (a) you could ever afford it, and (b) you'd be using it to play in a Smashing Pumpkins tribute band.
I've had basses for years and never been the most careful of owners, but i can safely say that wearing out the paint job on guitars without actually going out of your way to do so is pretty hard. I'm guessing i'd need to own a guitar like the ones shown, and use it every day for about 30 years before it looked even remotely like that. By which time it'd probably be worth more than the average house. This kids really are fooling nobody but themselves. |

Our visual art edge of our music is that we look like we don't have a visual art edge.

Who relic-ed Willie is what I wanna know. That's a pretty decent job on a 35 year old.
