oh while we devour this delightful little book i though of a couple of readings that might help illuminate our dark path, har har.

i know of a book of gogoliana by nabokov that guerney mentions. if any of you have read it please post reviews, links, etc.

the whole discussion of russian vs. universal that noumenal spearheaded made me think of something i read by lukacs-- it wasn't the theory of the novel... i'll have to unearth some books. but i'm putting this as a space saver or an invitation maybe to somebody to join & post what im trying to think about (ha ha)

the other thing that stands out, the notion of social classes and the infinite discriminations the russian makes, and how these classes interact, makes me think constantly of that brilliant book by thorsten veblen, "the theory of the leisure class", available for a buck i think on dover thrift editions. or simply, HERE!

that's a crazy book if there ever was one, but more accurate than marx in its social analysis. vaguely reminiscent of gulliver's travels in its near-fantastic approach to human behavior. and also one of jorge luis borges's recommendations in his "personal library" (a list of 100 prologues if i remember).

anybody else?

Who else loves the Russian authors as much as me? Dostoevsky, Gogol, Chekov, Tergenuv, Nabokov. Excellent. Their descriptions of people, daily life, events, just surperb.

I thought, as a good supplement to Russian literature, I would read another book simultaneously as well.

Somehow I ended up reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Not quite part of the Russian compendium, but I like it.

This is probably what I should have started. Hopefully I will, but if I put too much on my plate I'll end up getting burnt out on reading, so I'll finish these two first.

i have a lovely reading of anna karenina once upon a time-- it was summer. i haven't had such luck with dostoievski's longer works-- notes from the underground or a gentle soul, however, did the trick. i've read 1/2 or brothers karamazov, 1/2 of crime & punishment. perhaps bad translations or just shitty, stinky paperbacks.

joyce was in paris, after quitting medical school he set up residence in the national library; once he sent a letter home that included the sentence last week i read the russians. i guess he meant all of them

Sort is sort of relative to this.

As I mentioned before, my aunt is in Russia and I spoke to her the other night. I told her I was reading Dead Souls with a book club, and asked her to pick up a Russian version of the book.

I'll scan some pictures of the book when I get it. I doubt I'll be albe to read the bulk of it, but still this is of interest.

I'm ready for another discussion. In fact I've finished Dead Souls and Big Sur, and have begun Pattern Recogntion.

yeah i've been purposefully delaying this one waiting for people to join in. not a lot of time to read however due to a) work b) time wasted here (ha ha).

so when is it that we decided to meet again? the 11? is that a sunday? are there games at the time? can't we do it on monday instead after noumenal is back? i can't always guarantee to be lucid on sundays.

I found this:
http://www.languagehat.com/archives/002163.php

Which is more than a few months ago, but sounds promising.

Also seems to contain some discussion on the topic through comments, but I haven't read them. If you're sure of the issue # it could easily be eBayed for very cheap.
