Okay, so it has been confirmed that I will be living on that war torn peninsula by the end of the month. However, I know nothing about Korean music. So might any of you be so kind as to supply me with names of good Korean music? I'm really open to anything from traditional sounds to punk bands to anything else, except Starcraft remixes. I'll even try out some K-pop if it's any good.

Good thread with lots of K-pop here. I asked a friend who's been living out there for 2 years about other Korean music recently, and he said it was all shit. From what I can gather, there's a minimal Japanese jazz influenced scene and odds and sods of lightweight rock in terms of the modern. I've tried listening to a few traditional compilations, and I can't really hear a great deal of difference between, say, Pipa music and the Korean traditions - though that's likely down to my ears not being attuned to east-Asian subtleties.
If you do find out though, let me know. Also, if you fancy picking up some tapes or CDs while you're out there, I'll happy remunerate you at a convenient point.

Sinawi music is quite interesting and occasionally reminiscent of free jazz sax squawking.

Pansori is a kind of traditional music. Mostly it consists of singer and the drummer. The singer tells the stories, the old story.
Singer can give their own interpretation to it. Sometimes they sing for 8 hours. And many singers go to mountains, temples extra and train their sound. When the singer sings well in the soul of the song, people call him or her "got the sound". And the drummer, drums the traditional korean drum. When you see them singing for real it would be a special experience. And i'm gonna introduce you the instrument that has unique and sad sound. sound of "haegum" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0hG7tw9QIU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmRe5vgwzhY |
