So to both satisfy my desire for good music as well as to teach me some French, what is exciting musically at the moment in France? I haven't really been able to find much, but i'm clearly not looking in the right places. People in the know - help me out - some myspaces would be great!
Thanks t.

I did a thread about it a while ago:
http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/sho...t=French+bands Believe it or not there's not that much great music in France, but there's still really fantastic bands out there. But don't always look for something sung in French, cause most good french bands sing in english... Gomm sometimes sing in French though |

No problem! You should really check Gomm, imo they're one of the best french bands at the moment. Their last album, "4", was fantastic, and so was their first, Destroyed to Perfection (I have it in the first autoproduced edition, bought it before it got reissued on PIAS)

Agree with SYRFox, french music isn't very good at the moment, it depends on what kind of music you're looking for.

As there's currently not much good music sung in French I'll make a list of albums worth checking out from any period:
Serge Gainsbourg - Jane et Serge / Histoire de Melody Nelson Françoise Hardy - Comment te dire adieu / La question Brigitte Fontaine - Brigitte est... / Comme à la radio / S/T / Vous et nous Alain Bashung - Fantaisie militaire Dominique A - La mémoire neuve / L'horizon Jean-Louis Murat - Dolorès / Mustango You should be able to listen to songs from those albums on http://www.jiwafm.fr/fr or http://www.deezer.com/

The French-singing artist I prefer these days and who's still alive and kicking is Adrienne Pauly.
Her lyrics are clever, but they're sure hard to catch. As they're well written, they carry different meanings. They're in the booklet of her album. http://www.myspace.com/adriennepauly She's really good live. |
