Hang on. Thurston's stepson is 12 years old?! Wasn't Thurston with Eva in the early/mid nouties leading to his breakup with Kim and ultimately the band in 2011? And yet she had a child with someone else in 2012?! What the fuck

After some shady investigative shenanigans I find: in 2014 T-dawg admits to having been in a relationship with Eva for 6 years at that point which puts the start of their courtship at 08'. Here's where things get rather love islandy. Eva gets married and has a kid in 09' and again in 11' to her then husband Bernardo Guillermo. Just...lol. For Bernardo's sake I hope he sprung the paternity test on tha' dorty ho'

Interesting read. I do call bullshit on Thurston and his "baloney sandwich"/working class nonsense. I visited the Miami area twice a year growing up and can tell you that Coral Gables was (and probably still is) an affluent suburb of Miami.

hold on there you maoist red guards, put down your dumb pitchforks

t's father was a professor, i think i remember he taught flute maybe? coral gables is home to the university of miami, there are a number of college csmpuses in fairfield

the music department does not pay fortunes, much less in non-elite schools, but professors generally live around campus. same as the students, who are rarely loaded, and yet dwell in the same zip codes. academia generally grants more social prestige than money. for all we know, the moores might have lived in faculty housing at some juncture

and back during the 50s and 60s and into the 70s, even a working class job could support a nonworking spouse. so let's not try to cast aspersions that professor moore may have been some sort of united fruit company tycoon or a commuting wall street corporate raider just because of his location. he was, indeed, a music teacher

as for baloney: i grew up comfortably (upper?) middle class and loooved to eat mortadella (mortadella is the original "bologna" aka "baloney"...).

now my traditionalist father wouldn't have tolerated a mere cold sammich as "dinner", he always expected a proper evening meal as just recompense for his daily professional efforts, and he was old school anyway, but we the kids would often get away with evening sandwiches and milk with ovaltine and things like that, especially on weekends when my mother didn't feel like cooking and the maid had the day off. and mortadella was fucking great!

so maybe t's parents being more boho musical and less bourgeois than business executive types could just regularly chow on baloney and chill whenever they felt like it. why the fuck not? fun times, and fewer dishes to wash. now if you think processed meats signify actual misery... maybe you're the actual snob? and what's your take on the hotdog? très gauche caviar le lol

fuck, it's the middle of the night and i want a baloney bowl now. thanks matty matheson for the recipe, you hilarious guy. anybody reading this, look for the matty matheson baloney bowl youtube, he will not disappoint. oh well to save everyone time, here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rllK0NBtk-w

anyway, now that you wannabe cultural revolutionaries know my economic background ("management") you may be itching to sentence me to a reeducation camp to dig ditches and eat only turnips, but i shall let you know that i don't give 3 fucks about your pol pots, i owe nobody an explanation, i live like a pirate, and if you approach me with ill intentions you will be shot in the gut with 00 buckshot, and then maybe you'll join the mortadella, hahahahaaaa. just metaphorically of course, im not leatherface, so don't cry wolf now, jeezus fucking christ, professional victims...

Read T's book.

Kim grew up far more "affluent" than him.

get over it.

Most professional musicians do not come from the poor or working classes. It takes a bit of $$$ to buy instruments, lessons, etc.

punks can make music with thrift store guitars, but, lets be real, most "punk" bands from the last 30 years are suburban kids, whether they grew up fucked up or not.

There's nothing to "get over." I made a true statement. You're making a lot of unwarranted assumptions. Thurston's backround has nothing to do with the validity of his music. I never said it did. I wouldn't expect any better from the clown who uses symbols as a user name and is a troll and total asshole. From you I do expect better.

Genteel Death 2 has a couple of kiss-ass net friends
I can't read the article without having to pay, but I am assuming Thurston, after living all these years in England, thinks he's the new Noel Gallagher?

the oasis guy? thinks he's a working class hero or something?

not at all. thruston just said basically he doesn't need artisanal charcuterie and can jam econo, because he is spooked by current real estate prices in the area (and would like a house there)

(i'll add the context that a lot of the financial industry moved to florida during covid, and rents and property values have skyrocketed recently, but miami herald readers don't need to be told that)

(and seen differently altogether: he can eat like a child)

it's a leap of thought really, to me the association read kinda like proust's madeleine, hhahaha, well just the principle not the execution. the place brings backs his childhood memories, and as a kid he liked baloney (as a kid should). food, place, and memory together

the rest is just the fevered speculation of the internet's holy inquisition looking for something to call him out on

"he's not puuuuuure... he had moneyyyyy... took a loverrrr.." etc

a pestilent social media habit. worse than intestinal worms. more nauseating than hepatitis

lmfao im so fed up with that shit. it's everywhere these days and it's really pissing me off. it reduces all subjects to a single subject. so really it's fucking stupid because we can't talk about anything anymore except what someone did wrong or how it was offensive. zzzzzzzzzzz

anyway the article was nice actually. i liked that the writer did a long rambling piece about this and that, without any kind of hurry (must be the tropics). but also while it was long it was never tedious, mainly because the writer did not make himself the center of the story (a great relief). mixed interviews, book excerpts, a bit of everything, a nice amalgam. i used vpn and reader mode in browser to bypass the paywall (apologies to the writer for my sins)

eta: extra incentive for you, the article contains the word "genteel"

my original post here was because miami was flooded last week. it looked really fucked up. maybe thurston should buy a boat instead of a house. would save him the airfare too and spare the atmosphere like greta t in her travels

Not overly surprised on the first point

I guess what I might have been going for with my earlier thoughts is that there's the whole narrative about early-career Sonic Youth being impoverished young adults living in a shithole in the bowels of old-school New York, but part of that was a voluntary choice to throw yourself into where the art scene was, consequences and enjoyment to be damned. It's for the best that Thurston et al were able to make the most of it and not have to return to the nest, but it feels almost dishonest to ignore that it was quite a convenient nest to start from.
There's a lot of musicians out there who come from uber-privileged backgrounds (which Thurston's wasn't, I'll admit - his parents don't have Wikipedia pages lmao) and try to sell themselves as an up-from-the-gutters newcomer, and it's probably worth critiquing that cultural niche. Of course, feel free to take this as a bitter middle-class suburbanite griping about what she hasn't had - that's probably what it is.

that "whole narrative" is a strawman. i mean, all young people and students are "impoverished" almost by definition. unless you're an aristocrat or a wastrel or a crime or disaster victim, you start adult life in relative poverty and after a lifetime of work acquiring skills and growing your income you have some kind of relative wealth vs your beginning (eg a house in coral gables). and then the net worth starts to get dismantled among nurses and doctors due to the mounting health problems of old age

i haven't read the entire book, but in the free excerpt you read that thurston would return to ct often for a break from his rathole apartments. much like college students might go home for the weekend for a decent meal and some laundry, he'd go home and get some rest from his musician apprenticeship

when thoreau was living in walden pond, practicing simplicity or whatever, he'd often walk 2 miles home for cookies at his moms house. he never mentions this in his book of course. but thurston, refreshingly, does

of course thurston is not julian casablancas, but does casablancas go around pretending to have grown up in a trailer park?i dont know these people you mention, but if they exist honestly who cares

even as a middle class suburbanite, you are impoverished as a student in relation to the way you grew up. your student job and/or loans or subsidies or allowances could not afford you the same situation you grew up in. so your sense of deprivation is there. the utopian ideations and aspiration of middle class young people often come from that. and their temporary identification with the proletariat vanishes when they get their first real paycheck. at that moment they become their conservative parents, hahahaha

now consider being the same age but stuck in gaza or venezuela or sudan and you'll realize that in spite or whatever problems you may have, you're actually loaded by virtue of your birth and location, and surrounded by opportunities you could seize *right now*.

the problem with being spoiled is focusing on what you lack rather than on what you actually have and what you can make of it. that's the real impediment. ask an immigrant if they'd like to swap places with you... they'd gladly risk their lives for it. the point is not to feel guilty about it but rather to do something useful or beautiful with your chances, even for an audience of none
