You mean, Back to the Front and that live one I forgot the name of? I mean, they're just Beefheart songs without Beefheart (sometimes vocalless, sometimes John French does the vocals), they're probably worth listening to. I mean, it's still great music. No new surprises though. Or are you talking about Mallard? Yeah, some of that stuff's okay. Haha.
An album I always found really interesting was John French's "O Solo Drummo", it's just Beefheart songs recorded on drums. That's it. It's like an 80 minute drum album, recorded on tons of mics, so it really has the best drum sound you'll ever hear too. Seek that out, if you're into drums. |

Yeah, I mainly meant back to the front. I hadn't realised that it was just old Beefheart songs though. I'd assumed it was like new Magic Band instrumentals. Not so interested now. That John French sounds interesting, but not a HUGE drum person.

The interesting thing, if you really get reading about Beefheart, is that he apparently didn't stop composing music until '93 or so. I even read he made some new songs with Gary Lucas and such playing guitar. So, honestly, he probably has tons of tapes of things that I hope one day will be unleashed upon the world. Even as someone who's been into Beefheart for 9 years (and really hardcore for the past 4 or so), I still discover new things all the time. Little sessions and bootlegs... a thrownaway song here, some random sketch there that never made it to anything.. currently, I'm looking for the Ice Cream for Crow sessions bootleg, which is individual recordings of the layers that made up the album. The tracklisting makes my mouth water. Track titles like "SEMI MULTI COLORED CAUCASIAN (guitar 1 only)" and "THE PAST SURE IS TENSE (bass only)". Only been able to find it once, shared on some shitty Zappa FTP bullshit, and it was impossible to get without going through a bunch of bullshit.

It has a lack of noticable songs I think. Only the early era.
