I got it today and I'm already in love. Better than the Unicorns.

Better than the Unicorns my ass. The best songs on the album are the songs that are Unicorn-esque. It's a lot more subdued, none of the energy of the Unicorns.

Don't swear around me. I'm impressionable.
It is good. It sounds like the Unicorns but a bit more epic and laid-back. I skipped over half of the Unicorns songs. Rap and Penny-Whistle. Pure Brilliance.

I didn't mean to imply that I don't like the Islands' new record. It's just that the Unicorns were so amazing. They were great because they weren't epic. It wasn't this attempt at making some high-brow artistic statement. It was just incredibly fun and inventive pop music. Genius.
The first 7 songs on Return to the Sea are solid. "Rough Gem"(one of those Unicorn-esque songs) is probably my favorite song. But it loses steam towards the end, and the last few songs are pretty boring.

Rough Gem is actually a Unicorn song I think. There are videos of them performing it live on YouTube.
I dunno. I guess the novelty wore off. I like it about equally but I kind of wore myself off on the record. Besides, I haven't listened to Xiu Xiu in almost a week. Damn Islands and their distracting me from my love, Jamie Stewart.

Yeah Rough Gem was a Unicorns song.
More unicorns pics! I finally got around to buying this CD, and i am loving it. Its not as good as "Who will cut our hair when we're gone?" but certain songs like Whalebone are just excellent. I missed them the last time they came to my town (i had to go to a funeral) i hope they will tour here again. Islands Pic Did you notice they thanked Alden in their liner notes? i guess the bad blood between them isn't that bad. |

I just saw them play in New York last night at Webster Hall. All ages shows suck. There were way too many little kids screaming obnoxious shit and bumping into me. The band played really well, but Nick was kind of an asshole on stage, which is pretty normal I guess. I saw them in NY back in 2006 on their Return to Sea tour which was slightly more upbeat; Nick really doesn't like performing old stuff
