Godard doesn't want DVD's of his work released, PERIOD. He HATES dvd's. He said the ONLY way to watch movies is at a cinema. He also said a non-Frence person should NEVER watch his work as they will only understand "6%, at the most" of it.
So... if we only watch what he "approves", we wouldn't be able to see his films, period. |

What a dick.
I'm sure he's watched plenty of American films with translations. Should he have not watched those because he would on;y understand 6% of it? That's just silly. Being a fan of his films, I would like to understand French so that I could appreciate them without subtitles, but what kind of filmmaker puts so much weight on the dialogue? I don't need to speak French to understand the visuals and the non-speaking sounds, which I'm pretty damn sure makes up about 85% of a movie. |

Well... I think perhaps what he means is that his films have a lot of things going on them that would only be understandable to the French... maybe he's saying something's lost in the language barrier, whereas american films are usually easy for him to understand.
Who knows -- it's just Godard. But like I said, to be fair, he doesn't even want his movies on DVD, period (notice he's never participated in any dVD releases of his work), so... |
