Interesting that precisely what you don't want from bluegrass is precisely what I like about it (old men on the verge of death).

I don't know a great deal about bluegrass, but I do know that Doc Watson or the Carter Family are essential for anyone's collection. But you might also enjoy something brilliantly inauthentic like Hayseed Dixie. Or if the more commercial side of things interests you, Dolly's Little Sparrow or the Dixie Chicks should see you right. Obviously, Dolly can do no wrong.

Herr Rail knows a lot more about modern country than I do, I'm sure he'll post something useful.

Oh, and the best thing I ever saw Nickel Creek do was when the mandolinist played a Bach piece for the BBC.
