The Cure and The Smiths' music are indeed different, The Smiths were more influenced by folk / folk-rock like Bert Jansch or the Byrds while The Cure were more into Bowie or Hendrix.

The Smiths are more ironic but still there's some similarity in the romanticism (that would be the common point I see).

I'll specify that by the way Robert Smith and Morrissey really can't stand each other (but that won't prevent me from loving both bands).
