"They Were Wrong so We Drowned" is about half a good album. Interesting production though! Reminds me of Kill Me Tomorrow in a way...
Honestly, when I first heard "trench" about 5 1/2-6 years ago, it blew my mind. Thinking about it now, that is probably their best album, "dance punk" or not. It's a shame that the core talent in that band left!!
To me, they are an interesting band but also very very inconsistent, especially in the art of song structure. To put it simply, they cannot write a song. Their songs have no flow. That's why I think "Drum's Not Dead" is good; it didn't NEED to have flow, because it was drum exercises and effects-heavy excursions into near-ambient sub-sonic dark tribal depths while still retaining the weird Liars-rant vocal style.. they weren't trying to write "songs" persé. Don't get me wrong, they're okay, but they seem like they're capable of something AMAZING and have yet to accomplish it.
Still a fan, though, and will check out anything they do. I'm curious about the album they never released (if anyone knows what I'm talking about).. they recorded a whole album sometime.. I think between the first 2 albums.. and it never came out. It's a shame, because one of their songs that was recorded for the Peel show was amazing. Track that down if you can. It's one of their best songs.. it goes "everyone's to blame but me, just past the creep salloon the drunken cowboy plays the basoon, no one's to blame but me, everyone's to blame but me" or something like that. Amazing song. I haven't heard it in 4 or 5 years but it's really good.
