The Australian music industry may be ready to embrace Nick Cave with an induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame this weekend, but the iconic musician isn't returning the love.
The 50-year-old singer will attend the ARIA Awards ceremony on October 28 where he will join some of Australia's best known and loved performers in the Hall of Fame.
But he will be a reluctant participant.
"I'm actually dreading it to be completely honest because I have to go to the ARIA Awards," Cave said.
"That's something I've been avoiding for 25 years because I think it's so f...ing tedious.
"But I think I'm allowed to come in the back door, get inducted - however they're going to induct me - and leave and go and get a kebab."
Cave denied reports that the ARIA board had been offering him a spot in the hall of fame for up to six years and he had repeatedly declined.
"No, I've never been asked actually," he said.
"They just asked me this year and I said 'yeah'."
The prolific songwriter left Australia in 1980 and now lives in Brighton in the south of England.
He is back in the country touring with his new band, Grinderman, made up of members of his other group The Bad Seeds.
But asked whether he was keen to catch up with any of his contemporaries at the ARIA Awards, Cave responded dryly: "Yes, I'm desperately excited, I'm extremely excited to hang out with Powderfinger."
