As far as I can tell, death metal is more concerned with technical precision and low end than black metal, which is less hung up on chops, is far more shrill, and has high grim shrieks as vocals as opposed to the guttural "cookie monster" style of a lot of Death Metal groups. I am by no means 110% metal though, so don't quote me on this.

I think this is part of the problem: People who are heavily into the scene are either reticent to articulation or very inarticulate (or probably both). People who aren't just don't
know what the difference is. Hopefully I will be proved wrong presently.
