ok, as an example what if one were to use no music at all and just used say, the sound of footsteps, then made a system to route the walking of those footsteps through 32 outut channels in three rooms. the sound effects have to be edited very tightly and the software to program the walking path in any possible direction has to be programmed perfectly. this is not music, this is an installation, this involves sound and there is an element of the sculptural with the skill required to achieve such an aural sensation. this is not just footsteps either, there is breathing and a heartbeat recorded in an anechoic chamber which moves with the footspteps. sound design is a better term to use because the sound system has to be designed to carry all the outputs correctly through the transport busses, but then there is the conumdrum of the editing and construction element of the piece itself, and this still is not music, there is no musical instrument used, only some originally recorded sound effects and a well set up pa system..........
