They play roots music (many genres though) with some flash in a male/female guitar duo.
Now, I'm not some commoner douchebag that agrees with the consensus these players are virtuosos or anything, I just think they can play somewhat, that they play very well together, and that what they play doesn't make me want to puke.

Which is more than I can say for these other hipster replies.
Seriously, why is being able to play an instrument such a horrible thing? Damn, I know SY fans have a chip-on-their-shoulder, that's nothing new. I just never thought Sonic Youth fans would be so insecure and jealous as to automatically hate anyone that can play a fucking instrument.

where does this "indie enough" crap come from?

i really think their music is weak, not because it's not fashionable (in fact, i think they try too hard to be fashionable but that's just me) or because they are not good enough players, their music has no emotional weight at all, it's a big hollow, it's a nothing. i mean, it's just like three degrees better than kenny g or muzak.

and well, hipsters might not really like frith, haino, licht, o'rourke, yoshihide, etc. (unless they are aiming to get some cred by name dropping them) because it's not music designed to make them look cool, that's why they prefer the white stripes, interpol, yeah yeah yeahs, it's easily listening for the fashionable herd. whether an experimental guitarist my require more from the listeners.

and again, i would love to see rodrigo y gabriel even listen to ornette coleman, let alone try to do a solo guitar version of lonely woman (like i saw otomo yoshishide play last week).
