But I think it's definitely a good idea to quit unless you're still making albums at least nearly as good as your best stuff.

I feel the same way, especially when thinking of artists like Nirvana and MBV. They would have probably eventually degressed in musical quality if they comtinued making albums. However, MBV still exists, so you really never know.
