In 1913 Marcel Duchamps caused an uproar when his 'Nude descending a Staircase' was exhibited at the armory show, despite the fact that the only indication that the model was nude was in the title. It was predicted that many young girls would visit the show to look at nude sculptures. There was even more controversy when it was discovered that a Matisse model only had four toes.
