It's not a conscious fear.

The fear is an unconscious one driven by the differences in their sexual orentation from the majority of people.

It does become a conscious fear instantaneously when they are confronted with a hostile situation in physical reality.

Someone born in the southern United States to parents whose lineage is mainly southern will have a stronger psychological inclination towards being hard-wired to have strong racist tendencies. They may not even be racists, because they don't act on it, but they must strive to overcome these inherent genetic leanings & the conditioning of their environment.

Similarly, gays are hard-wired by genetics and conditioned by their environment to be fearful of repricussions. The internet affords an excellent stage for them to be as gay as they want to be, but since they don't want to go too far, because it may cause some to dislike them, they usually still are affected by their fears. This sets up a binge and purge cycle of mania about being gay and depression about being gay.
