Gentrification has fully arrived in Vienna and is tightening its grip.

Magistrates cracking down on cool, hole-in-the-wall alternative venues. We're only two months into 2024 and already, two places I frequented a lot had to cancel their entire programme for the upcoming months due to what seems like chicanery. Last year, one of the premiere outdoor (formerly autonomous) Punk venues had a long battle over new residents in the area complaining about the noise - the venue had been there for ages, it's an industrial part of town and those stupid, most likely overpriced housing blocks only cropped up recently.

Hosting events is getting more and more difficult - previously affordable venues now exert the full pressure of this hyper-capitalist mindset that's been creeping in seemingly everywhere.

It's a global phenomenon, but I was hoping its tendrils wouldn't quite intrude on sleepy Vienna as much. Fuck this.
