Backlight withdraws corona broadcast to safety people in China
The VPRO has decided not to broadcast a planned episode of Tegenlicht (which translates to Backlight) about corona in China. "Persons in China" would be endangered by the broadcast. The episode should have provided a glimpse into the lives of residents of the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the corona virus was first detected early this year.

The episode, entitled China Restart , featuring Ruben Terlou would air on Sunday. The editorial says today that it has "strong indications" that the individuals in question are at risk. The editors do not reveal who it concerns.

'Border where security is at stake'
The editorial says it is "regrettable" that the planned episode about the lockdown cannot go ahead. In a statement it says: "The VPRO stands for independent journalism and is willing to go very far to bring new stories and perspectives, but we draw the line where the safety of people is at stake."

In the broadcast, residents of Wuhan are asked about the lockdown and the current situation in Wuhan, as life in the city gets going again. The exact target of the threat remains unclear. The editors do not want to go into the matter any further, but are prepared to do so later, newspaper NRC Handelsblad writes.

There have been concerns about the Chinese censorship of corona information for some time. For example, several citizen journalists who had been critical of how to deal with the corona virus in the country went missing recently.
This guy Ruben Terlou is Dutch, but speaks fluently Chinese and has made several documentary series about China where he basically unscripted travels throughout the country and speaks openly with the regular people on the street. Very interesting, but as far as I'm aware there are no episodes with English subtitles on YT
