It's involvement should be keot at a minimum, picking up on blatant stuff the referee might reasonably be expected to see but for whatever reason missed (like that Lewandowski incident) rather than checking stuff so marginal that no one in real time could ever be expected to spot it. VAR should be there to help the referee not replace him.
