Songs that can't be covered

i was just listening to Sonic Youth covering to 'My New House' by The Fall and it just made me think of that. The Smiths, for one, are impossible to cover.

Savage Clone 10.19.2006 02:19 PM

Diamanda Galas' entire output.

i will say this: that is the ONLY good cover of a dylan song i've heard in my lifetime. and i agree. it's fucking fantastic.

Mainly that's cause everyone trys it. Even the simplest of his songs require an incredible amount of dexterity & skill, most people who cover Dylan don't quite have either.
Some people can, most can't, probably best left alone.

Rob Instigator 10.19.2006 02:31 PM

the smiths are very hard to cover, you need someone wgho not only can play the guitar like marr, but someone who can sing the phtrasing like Morrissey. I can sing it like a motherfucker. me and the Moz are the same range. The karaoke bar does not ahve suffcient smiths or morrissey stuff!!!

I can sing anything Morrissey sang! bring it on!

Johnny Cash's version of It ain't me babe is grand as well. Much better in a manly baritone rather than a whiny twats voice. Tijuana brass on a Dylan song? Why the begorrah not.

The Delgadoes and Prince spring to mind for impossible to cover bands. I think Erasure should be covered by not awful bands, they've written sooooo many brilliant songs that need a young and hip audience. Other than myself, obviously.

Glice 10.19.2006 03:49 PM

Oh, I neglected to mention - just how utterly pish is that Fall covers session? It's a rarity, and was probably quite fun at the time, but just so very bad.

Cantankerous 10.19.2006 03:51 PM

oh and i forgot about the johnny cash cover.

other than that, all of you, die.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 10.19.2006 03:54 PM

I think "My new house is sick."

I do entirely agree with you on the fact that Dylan can't be covered though. Apart from Johnny 'the polisher' Cash, there's only so much polishing you can do before you realise that the turd is never becoming a diamond.

Savage Clone 10.19.2006 04:10 PM

Let me get you some bactine for that wicked burn.

Cantankerous 10.19.2006 04:11 PM

fuck off, i said.

Everyneurotic 10.19.2006 04:11 PM

dylan should have died a long time ago.
