Umm, excuse me GMAIL but I think the exact OPPOSITE is true. Why would I want to put my phone number in my email account, so that when inevitably my GMAIL gets hacked like everyone else the malicious douche bags can have my phone number as well?

You mean Google Mail? they are the consumer division of the intelligence agencies - they just want to put more of your personal information together neatly - so they can pin your email to your phone habits and then learn about all the people you talk to and they talk to etc...people are sheep

See, that is exactly why I ain't been giving it to them.

its not the number itself, its associating it with an email, and from there associating it with a network of people connected with that email. And a browser IP. So if you get busted for weed, they can look at everyone who is in your network and roll it up. They can say you are planning terror because you looked at a bomb making site and then arrest you when you send someone an email they read under the Patriot Act that you are real mad and going to get even with someone. They have always been able to do this manually, but now they want to have the software doing this in the background. Or most obviously, ifyou are planning protests agiainst say frakking or Wall Street corruption they can shut you down in advance.
