The Infamous SNL Replacements performance

For those who are interested, this is SNL when the Reaplacements were the musical guest. However, the 'mats came on really drunk, said "fuck" on the air, and were bannaed from playing on SNL again.

still doesn't even compare to the FEAR performance they did on SNL. nothing came even close to that one.

I don't know. The Replacements' Bastards of Young has always been a favorite SNL performance of mine. So much so, that I've written of it before a few times in the past.

Other greats were Paul Simon with George Harrison, the Grateful Dead doing Casey Jones, Bowie with Scary Monsters, Patti Smith Group's Gloria cover, Beastie Boys' Body Movin', Neil Young's Rockin' in the Free World, Duran Duran's two songs & Laurie Anderson's two appearances.

As you undoubtably know, it was John Belushi's lobbying that got Fear on the air.

Lately, the musical guest portion of the program has been fairly awful with popular stuff like Outkast's Hey Ya & Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl being among the most recent standouts.

i was actually disappointed with fear's performance once i watched it, the lore is bigger than the facts.

best SNL musical performance ever:

Talking Heads - Artists Only

I watched it several times a day for a long time after I taped it.

I've never seen the Capt Beefheart, Sun Ra or Ornette Coleman ones.
I think I may have seen the Sun Ra one actually, but it was a long time ago.

i taped the sun ra and talking heads ones. but i taped a ton of SNL stuff.. so i dont have any clue what tapes they are on... they were both awesome though.

atari 2600 09.10.2006 02:08 PM

Haha, yeah...I've got a sticker on the side of the VHS that says "TH" & on the label are these marks that indicate where the 2 tape reels are where "Artists Only" is on the videocassette. That's the only one I marked in such a way. The rest of my taped TV music stuff is on random tapes like you described. I used to have a whole videotape that had nothing but musical acts on it from various TV broadcasts, but I lost that tape in a move some years ago.

"Fear were banned from playing again after the 1981 Halloween episode. With Donald Pleasence as host, the band played that night by request from Fear fan John Belushi, and they proceeded to play offensive songs ("I Don't Care About You" and "Beef Balogna" among others) and bus in "dancers". The band also used obscene language and the dancers destroyed the set with their slam dancing onstage. The situation was out of control to the extent that the damage of studio equipment forced Dave Wilson to end the three-song performance by cutting the audio and video to a commercial as they started to play "Let's Have a War" . The episode has not been rebroadcast on NBC."

they actually have it on youtube somewhere. it was the most chaotic performance i've seen on SNL.

did anyone catch sparks on SNL?

baby bulldog 09.10.2006 04:27 PM

Seeing Fear live on TV on SNL changed my fucking life. What a moment....

atari 2600 09.10.2006 04:33 PM

Good catch...Yeah, I have Sparks on tape too somewhere.

LittlePuppetBoy 09.10.2006 04:51 PM

Devo and Sun Ra played on SNL? Who would've figured.

I meant this thread to be more a discussion of the Replacements themselves rather than SNL.

Everyneurotic 09.10.2006 05:18 PM

actually, the crowd that went to see fear on snl were ian mackaye and most of the dc punks, a lot of punks from boston (from bands like dys), some from new york (like people from the cro-mags) and a bunch of detroit punks like the guys from the necros and negative approach.

john belushi had mentioned he wanted black flag to be musical guests in a future snl, but he died before anything could actually be planned (i doubt they would have them)

Actually, the reason Black Flag didn't perform was because of what happened with Fear. They didn't want ANY more punk bands on the show.

khchris(original) 09.11.2006 12:48 AM

that's probably true because damaged was being courted by major labels or something like that. i could see black flag doing it.

I saw Ian speak at a college and said it was he who smashed a pumpkin when Fear was blazing away on stage...this caused everyone to slip and slide around in the pumpkin ooze and in general contribute to the televised mayhem. He also mentioned how cool Belushi was (offered him and his buddies orange soda)and how much of a dork Joe Piscopo was.

khchris(original) 09.11.2006 06:30 PM

hahaha! joe piscopo, with a name like that, he's gotta be a dick!

loved "new york's alright if you like saxophones"...that was so funny!
