Mike Kelly/Sonic Youth release?
This site doesn't look too updated:
http://www.mikekelley.com/compound.html coming soon: Mike Kelley with Sonic Youth: Plato's Cave, Rothko's Chapel, Lincoln's Profile (CD) (An audio document of the performance at Artists Space in New York, 1986, with Molly Cleator and Adam Rudolph. Features Kelley's feature length performance poem with incidental music by Sonic Youth.) |
thats been on there for years.
|
has this ever been confirmed by anyone as being released?
Mike Kelley. Plato's Cave w/ SY http://www.artbook.com/ca038.html I saw a copy this weekend at the Art Book Fair... Kelley's site still doesnt have it listed... Discogs shows a cassette release that I was previously unaware of. http://www.discogs.com/Mike-Kelley-T...elease/2251868 art book fair also had this.. http://www.mocastore.org/products/mike-kelley-poster |
Interesting! I know somebody posted a video of this performance, but I'm not sure if it was 55 minutes (and the excerpt from the Tellus comp definitely is not).
|
It was on UbuWeb in its entirety for the last 12 months, however I've just checked the link & its currently down. There are however some other video bits to be found here:
http://www.ubu.com/film/sonicyouth.html and the audio from it is available here: http://www.ubu.com/sound/sonicyouth.html as well as Thurston appearing on a Sonny Sharrock themed Space Ghost Coast to Coast here http://www.ubu.com/film/sharrock_ghost.html plus loads of other non-sonic related sonance. |
Kim Gordon performed with Jutta Koether at MoMA PS1 this past Sunday on the closing day of the Mike Kelley exhibition. Kim on guitar/vocals, Jutta on keyboards, and background noise from prerecorded CDs that Kim changed herself on a small boombox, alternating with Kim and Jutta doing readings from an interview between Kim and Mike Kelley. Outside the show copies of Kim's new book of art writings were on sale, including signed copies for just $20, and there seemed to be a lot so I wouldn't be surprised if the MoMA PS1 bookstore still has some...
|
yeah... i saw that kim gordon book as well...
no clue why amazon is charging nearly double for it... http://www.amazon.com/Kim-Gordon-Bod...rds=kim+gordon |

woah in-stock $20... should we assume this was just released on CD? Oddly that page lists no release date. |
well... I ordered the Kelley/SY CD. Looks pretty legit (doesn't it?) so figured it was worth $20.
|
Please let us know if it arrives and how it sounds! Hiland mentioned he saw one in person so I assume it's legit.

I mean if it was sold at that show Hiland was at then I'm guessing it's not a boot or anything. I'll keep y'all posted. :) |
yeah..it was actually being sold by the Musuem of Contemporary Art LA bookstore.... So it looked completely legit to me.
They've got a Mike Kelly exhibit starting march 31st. (I'm assuming what was in NY). I'm an idiot... dont know why I didn't buy it when i saw it... |
I guess I can't tell you guys anything. ArtBooks just refunded me. They didn't send an email or any note w/ the refund explaining. Just refunded me. :\

I have some mp3's of the cassette release, forget where I downloaded them from, maybe UbuWeb. Two tracks:
The Peristaltic Airwaves [41.58] Plato's Cave, Rothko's Chapel, Lincoln's Profile (w/Sonic Youth) [38:04] Never really made it through the whole thing, couldn't get past Mike's over the top vocal contribution. If it turns out they are not going to be commercially available, I can post it here. SY contribute intermittent dissonant atmospherics. I also have mp3 of the excerpt on Tellus #18, maybe also from Ubu Web?: Excerpt From "Plato's Cave, Rothko's Chapel, Lincoln's Profile" [13:22] Here is a link to UbuWeb's page for Tellus #1, with tracks by SY, Live Skull, Rat At Rat R, Rhys Chatham, etc... http://www.ubu.com/sound/tellus_1.html |

I ordered my copy from http://mikekelley.com/compound-annex/ a week ago, still hasn't arrived, though. edit: It just arrived! Apparently it's been out for a while, according to the Wayback Machine at least since June 8th, 2013. Copyright on the cd says 2012. |
