Do you impulse buy or plan?
I do a little of both, but I probably most enjoy the impulse buy. You go in with no preconceived ideas of what you're gonna get and, wham, there it is, that LP you never thought you'd see in the racks again. Those are the best.

sometimes i plan to get a certain album, but most of the time i just see something and go "ooooh that looks good" and if i can afford it i will get it.

i do the exact exact same thing. heres an example. wanting to get Thurston Moore's album for many days, walk in, see Modest Mouse's Sad Sappy Sucker. Buy SSS. i always end up wanting to get ________, and end up buying _____else... |
My trouble is, I start out wanting to get _____, and end up buying ______, but ALSO end up buying that new something else I walk in and see.
|
I do both, I plan to get something, and then I always pick up an impulse buy while I am there... I always get 2 cd's just in case I don't really like one, hopefully I will like the other...
|
I only really plan when it's a new release that I know is about to come out, or with really expensive collectables or box sets. Otherwise it's browse and grab...
|
Both. I deliberately build collections by certain bands, but sometimes in cool record shops I'll hear a nice piece that I'm unfamiliar with and buy that. I also like to check used record dealers, and it's nice when they have something in.

Yep that one happens to me. Especially in the sales. Damn you sales! |
Impulse. I spend a lot of weekends in record stores. Some of them are good enough to have personal recommendations. Some of them are patient enough to let me listen to things I haven't heard.
Sound323, as I've said a gizillion times, is an absolute godsend. Really helpful, they'll always have something I want in stock, and are always really good at finding something I haven't heard of for me to listen to. They are responsible for most of the really good avant-y stuff in my collection. If planned, I buy online so I don't get distracted (although I still get distracted...) |
I do the both, but most times I plan ; except for Sonic Youth. I would not like to buy a record I don't like...

Both, but impulse is more fun.
|
i do both but i have been known to have to be restrained in some instances. this however ked to me being in massive debt. infact i have gone the other way and become a real scrooge ha ha. i am not one for buying things near the checkout at the supermarket and only buy something if i really need it.
|
I had a dream last night that i was in a record store and there was a copy of Return to Cookie Mountain but it was 40 dollars..and i fucking bought it!! This import price shit is killing me.
|
I do both but when it is something I heard and know I want (like the new TV On The Radio for example) it is like a quick fuck with no joy. I go in, get it, pay and get out. it sucks ass.
I much prefer to know "OK, I have $60 to spend" and just go to the record stores and see what you find. that is my all time fave. I prefer that. |
ususlly htings occur to me but when it comes to sy it's impulse all the way.
|
Not both...but a combination....
I plan on buying things from so and so bands, and when I walk into the store I see albums from those bands and go on impulse from there. |
Plan. Only the essentials. you never come to a period of being totally satisfied with music, so I quit buying music pretty much altogether.
Now other media such as literature I will sometimes impulse buy if I like the first couple of pages, partially because I find its just better to really get into a book than a cd. |
mostly impulse but logically i guess both, if i know i need something like TAAAAAAMPONS.
|
I'll usually go to the store to get a certain CD, and end up getting that plus another one I'm not sure about. Or I'll just go and hope to find something that I forgot I wanted.
